CALDERON EXC-ELL OVERVIEW District Learning Day August 4, 2016 Session 6 Norms • Be present and engaged. • Be respectful of differences in perspective while challenging each other productively and respectively. • Monitor “air time.” • Make the most of the time we have. • Stay focused on students. Objectives • Know—Participants will know how the ExC-ELL method aligns to the ESL curriculum, CLIP and the TEM rubric • Understand—Participants will understand the three (3) fundamental lesson components from the ExC-ELL method • Do—Participants will implement these strategies in August and attend a follow up training session in September to align with CLIP and the TEM rubric Today’s Focus ● Preview the following Calderon ExC-ELL strategies: ○ 7-step Vocabulary Strategy ○ Partner Reading/Summarization ○ Write-Around/Ratiocination X X WHAT IS EXC-ELL? LET’S PRACTICE 1. The teacher asks students to say the word 3 times. 2. State the word in a sentence (context) from the text. 3. Provide the dictionary definition. 4. Explains meaning with student-friendly definition. 5. Highlights features of the word (i.e., multiple meanings, false cognates, prefixes, part of speech, synonyms, etc). 6. The teacher engages all students in an activity to orally use or own the word and concept. 7. The teacher when to use it. (i.e. stations, peer reading with oral and written summarization activities, writing prompts) • • • • • • WORD BANK Coast Islands Hotels Surrounded Geography Habitats Turn and Talk • How can you incorporate the 7-Step Vocabulary components of ExC-ELL into your ESL lessons? WHAT IS PARTNER READING WITH SUMMARIZATION? Partner Reading/Summarization Defined ➔ Partner Reading is when students read to each other in pairs. The focus is to increase oral reading fluency. ➔ Summarization is the basic retelling of the events in the text. The focus is to increase reading comprehension. Partner Reading Steps ●The teacher reads and models with a student “alternating sentences.” ●Students choose to be either Partner A or B ●Partner A reads the first sentence. ●Partner B reads the next sentence. ●Partners continue “alternating sentences” until the paragraph is complete. Summarization Steps ●After each paragraph is read, the partners jointly summarize what they read using Tier 2 and 3 words they learned from the passage. ●Teacher brings students together to discuss what was summarized after each reading of the paragraphs. VIDEO • INSERT LINK TO VIDEO HERE Partner Reading/Summarization for Newcomers ● The Newcomer is grouped with two higher-level EL’s. ● The Newcomer reads along with or echoes both Partner A and Partner B as they read their “alternating sentences.” ● The Newcomer also repeats what Partner A and Partner B states during summarization of a paragraph in a text. The goal is for the Newcomer to participate, and eventually summarize on his/her own with the support from their partners. Partner Reading/Summarization for Advanced Students ●Instead of alternating sentences, students can alternate reading entire paragraphs. ●When partner A reads the paragraph, partner B summarizes what their partner read. Switch for next paragraph. Scaffolds for all students ★Use Summarizing Menus or anchor charts with sentence stems ★Highlight or label sentences in the passage, identify when they need to summarize ★Display chart with previously taught vocabulary words to use in their summaries Turn and Talk • What questions do you have regarding the Partner Reading/Summarization component of ExC-ELL? • How can you use this strategy in your classroom? What is the “Write Around” Strategy? Write Around is an instructional strategy that develops students’ writing ability by asking them to think critically and constructively respond to other students’ opinions. Write Around Steps – Students are divided into teams of 3-4 – All students have a piece of writing paper and pencil – All Students write an initial sentence on the topic or prompt on their paper – Teacher monitors and says “pass” when students are ready (1 minute) – Students read their classmate’s entry and continue writing/respond to the prompt – Papers rotate in the same direction each time – Process is repeated until teacher calls time. Each student ends up with a compiled paragraph written by the entire group. Let’s Practice! Writing Prompt Teaching ESL is a rewarding profession. Write Around: KK-1 Accommodations • Start small (write words about the topic); then gradually progress into writing simple sentences (I can…; I want…; I like…) • Brainstorm writing ideas in Think-Pair-Share first • Students may use invented spelling (allows students to write all the creative thoughts in their head; practice phonemic awareness and write independently) • Write neatly, so classmates can read the writing; use spaces and punctuation. Ratiocination: What is it? ● Rationcination is… ○ a strategy used to revise writing while explicitly teaching grammar skills within the writing process. ● Purposes: ○ Integrate grammar skills into the writing process ○ Include students in the revising/editing process ○ Allow students to take ownership of their writing ○ Provide an opportunity for students to work collaboratively Ratiocination Chart Sample Ratiocination Work Sample Ratiocination: Suggestions/Modifications ● Include a grammar mini-lesson before doing this strategy ● Tailor the ratiocination chart to fit the needs of your classroom ● Always include a review grammar skill (i.e. capitalization/punctuation) ● Make it fun using colored pencils, highlighters, markers, stickers, etc. Assessing Writing • ESL Writing Rubrics – https://sites.google.com/a/seattlecentral.edu/bts d/Home/writing-rubrics-spring-2010 • Rubistar – http://rubistar.4teachers.org/index.php Reflection • How can you use these writing strategies into your classroom?
