Content:
Data mining and knowledge discovery in databases, as it is also known, is the non-trivial
extraction of implicit, previously unknown and potentially useful information from the
data. This encompasses a number of technical approaches, such as clustering, data
summarization, classification, finding dependency networks, analysing changes, and
detecting anomalies.
We live in the information-age—accumulating data is easy and storing it inexpensive. In
1990s it was alleged that the amount of stored information doubles every twenty months.
Unfortunately, as the amount of machine readable information increases, the ability to
understand and make use of it does not keep pace with its growth. Machine learning
provides tools by which large quantities of data can be automatically analysed.
Fundamental to machine learning is feature selection. Feature selection, by identifying the
most salient features for learning, focuses a learning algorithm on those aspects of the
data most useful for analysis and future prediction.
Motivational Quote:
“A good scientist is a person with original ideas. A good engineer is a person who makes
a design that works with as few original ideas as possible.
“The question of whether a computer can think is no more interesting than the question of
whether a submarine can swim.”
