Pilgrims/ Thanksgiving
Unit 2; Colonization
Lesson 6
What I need to know…
1. Why did European countries colonize other parts of the world?
2. What geographic features made some locations appealing for
colonization?
3. What cultural beliefs did Europeans use to justify their colonization of people
around the world?
Objectives
Explain how environmental conditions and
human response to those conditions influence
modern societies and regions (e.g. natural
barriers, scarcity of resources and factors that
influence settlement)
Guiding Questions
 1. What factors motivated colonization among European countries?
 2. What geographical features were beneficial for colonization? Why?
 3. What cultural beliefs did Europeans use to justify their colonization of
peoples throughout the world?

them. Be sure to take notes
Who are they?
 Religious Puritans who were living
in England.
 Wealthier groups
 Were being imprisoned in
England for speaking against the
king and the “official” religion
 Ran to Holland to escape, but
found persecution there as well
Mayflower
 Ship that brought the Pilgrims to
the New world.
 Originally supposed to be two…
the other was the Speedwell…
something was wrong with it, so
they ended up filling the
Mayflower alone
Mayflower
 It was a really long journey to the New world
 Original destination was to be in New England
 After only 66 days, they began to fall ill and many died along the way
 Ended up not reaching their destination and landed in an unknown area
 There was some discontent on the ship, so they created the Mayflower
contract which became the first form of government in the U.S.
What was life like in Plymouth
 When Pilgrims FINALLY reach destination… Call it Plymouth
 This was a colony made of wealthy-ish people… they did not know how to
survive and landed during a non-growing season
 Didn’t know how to farm
 Began to die off…. quickly
Squanto and the Native Americans
 Reached out to the Colonists
 Gave them food and treated the ill
 Taught them to farm
 Taught them crop rotations
 They would never have made it
without them
Thanksgiving… What is it?
 Well…. We all know it as a time off from school and some YUMMY food.
 This celebration is to give thanks for a successful growing season. The native
Americans were instrumental in teaching the settlers to growing
 In honor of this time, the Pilgrims got together a lot of food their grown and
caught food and invited the Indians to give thanks for this successful time.
