Smiley Face Traits
Simulation of Inherited Traits
We will create a “Smiley Face” with
traits determined by chance.
Determining Traits
• An offspring receives half of the genetic
instructions from mom and half of the genetic
instructions from dad.
• “Chance” plays a big part in which traits are
passed on or inherited.
• For this activity, you need to find a partner.
Genotype
• The genotype is the “code” in letters that will
help determine the trait.
• Capital letters will represent Dominant traits.
Dominant Traits will cover or “mask” the
other.
• Lower case letters will represent Recessive
traits. These traits are “hidden” traits.
“Chance”
• You and your partner will flip a coin to
determine which traits are matched.
• If you get HEADS, then circle the capital letter.
• If you get TAILS, then circle the lower case
letter.
Phenotype
• Phenotype is the appearance of the trait in
the organism.
• If there is a CAPITAL LETTER, then the
dominant trait shows.
• If there are two lower case letters, then the
recessive trait shows.
Look on Trait Key to determine the
phenotype.
