Scientific Theories
Through time.
Heterogenesis
 Life
of one form is derived from life of
another form

(eg. Bees from flowers)
Spontaneous Generation
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dlbh6024R1c

AKA “Abiogenesis”

Developed by Aristotle – influenced by heterogenesis

Noted that mice come from dirty hay, crocodiles come
from rotting logs at the bottom of swamps, flies come
from dung

The natural process of life arriving from non-living matter
spontaneously
Robert Hooke

1665

First scientist to publish drawings of micro organisms
 Common
reaction to his publishings:
“Whoah, we’re made of tiny living things?!”

Coined the term “cell” for the smallest living thing.
Francesco Redi

BUSTED THE THEORY OF SPONTANEOUS GENERATION!
He disproved this theory by experimenting with two chunks of meat.
 Chunk 1: Left out over a series of days
 Result: Meat was filled with maggots, thus spontaneous
generation must have occurred
 Chunk
2: Left out over a series of days BUT was kept concealed in a jar.
 Result: Meat was a little hot and smelly, but NO MAGGOTS.
Redi realized that the reason there was no maggots was because flies
were kept from the meat and thus could not lay eggs.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek


1676

Discovered and observed protozoa and bacteria.

“Father of Microbiology”

Known for his further development of the microscope

The discovery of the existence of micro organisms
supported the theory of spontaneous generation because
such small organisms were thought to be too simple to
reproduce sexually or even asexually.
(Obviously, they didn’t know about cell division.. yet.)
Louis Pasteur


1854

Discovered that microbes like bacteria and fungi don’t
spontaneously appear in sterile, nutrient rich environments, but only
invade from the outside

Revolutionary breakthrough in causes and prevention of diseases

Invented Pasteurization

Treating milk and wine with heat to kill bacteria.

Biogenesis


Alternative to abiogenesis (spontaneous generation)
 Every living thing came from a pre-existing living thing.
Biogenesis is now a fact, not a theory
