5th Grade Study Guide Unit 1 - Lessons 1 and 3 Test Lesson 1 (p 3-11) Vocab: investigation, science, evidence, opinion, fact, inference, observe, compare, similarity, difference, spontaneous generation, maggot, direct evidence, indirect evidence, conclusions, communicate Key Concepts: ● All scientists try to explain how and why things in the natural world happen. They do this by observing, comparing, and making investigations. ● Spontaneous generation is the old idea that life can come from nonliving or dead things like wood, rocks, or rotting meat. ● Francesco Redi did an experiment in the 1660s in Italy to determine if spontaneous generation was true or not. He placed meat in two different jars - one covered and one uncovered. Spontaneous generation would be true if maggots appeared in both jars, but since maggots only appeared in the uncovered jar, he was able to conclude that maggots grew on rotting meat because they were the hatched eggs of flies, NOT because maggots themselves miraculously appeared in the meat. Evidence (proof) that disproved spontaneous generation was not happening was the fact that only the open container of meat produced maggots. ● Another scientist who did an experiment that disproved spontaneous generation was Louis Pasteur. He did not study meat and maggots, though. He boiled broth and observed that microorganisms like bacteria and mold only grew in the broth that had an opening for air on top. The broth that was in the “swan neck flask” did not grow bacteria because microscopic organisms could not land in the broth without getting stuck in the swan neck tube. ● Scientists shouldn’t jump to conclusions quickly or use opinions to affect the way they do investigations. ● Good scientists communicate their results with other scientists and check each other's work ● (You do not need to know the video game timeline on p 11) More Resources: Notes on the Class Page (includes Bill Nye spontaneous generation video!) P 14-15 to review vocabulary Lesson 3 (p 23-35) Vocab: scientific methods, experiment, variable, control, repeated observations, model, procedure, conclusion Key Concepts: ● Know how to set up an experiment in the correct order of steps (from question to conclusion) ● Know how to make a bar graph (review p 34-35 for extra practice) ● Know why controlled experiments are not always possible. ● Know what the Ring of Fire is (p27) ● Be able to identify how models are similar and different from real life versions of things. More Resources: ● Coin Drop Lab ○ Why is it important to change only one variable at a time? ○ What is the difference between a hypothesis and a question? ● Turtle Yoga Lab Worksheet to review parts of an experiment and good graphing. ● Review vocabulary on p 36 (answers on bottom of page) and 37
