What is Greek Speak? Greek Speak are literary devices that were used by the Greeks that we can use in our writing today to help with the structure and flow in our writing EXAMPLES: • Metaphor, simile, personification Why is Greek Speak Important? • Can create emphasis on the rhythm of the sentence or • Exaggerated an image Chiasmus Inverting a sentence in which two or more clauses are balanced against each other by reversing their structure for artistic effect. Example: I meant what I said and said what I meant.” –Dr. Seuss Zeugma A word that applies to multiple parts of the sentence. It causes confusion in a sentence while also adding some flavor. Example: She dug for gold and for praise. Antithesis • It is used as a literary device to put two contrasting ideas together. • Example: “Patience is bitter, but has sweet fruit” - Aristotle Epanalepsis A figure of speech defined by the repetition of the initial word done again at the end of the same clause or sentence. Example: “Nothing can be created out of nothing.” Lucretius Hyperbole Exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally. Example: I’ve told you a million times. Teacher Example “Student teachers smile on the outside, but cry on the inside.” As a class: let’s evaluate the example and determine the literary device. Match the term to the example listed. Your Turn You will be grouped and assigned a group number (1,2,3,4,5). Select a group member to come write your example on the board. In your group, analyze your literary term and create your own example. As we discuss student examples, write them down on the provided line on the graphic organizer.
