Guitar Perspectives 2015 The MCM proudly presents Guitar Perspectives, a series of four concerts showcasing the breadth and diversity of the instrument in the twenty-first century. Concert 1: Monday 17 August, 7.30pm (Melba Hall) Melodramatic Guitar Mauricio Carrasco – guitar Sapidah Kian – narrator This recital explores different possibilities of Monodrama/Melodrama and the guitar, referring to the presence of spoken words and theatrical actions within a work of music. The music includes Carrasco’s transcription of Georges Aperghis’ solo harp Fidélité, a new work by Argentinean composer Fernando Garnero and a commission for e-guitar for Mark Ravenhill and David Chisholm’s monodrama The Experiment. Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s first book of musical melodrama Platero y yo for guitar and narrator will conclude the recital. Concert 2: Thursday 27 August, 7.30pm (Melba Hall) Jazz guitar and Beyond Geoff Hughes – guitar Tom Lee – bass Ronny Ferella – drums Leading jazz guitarist Geoff Hughes leads this trio in a special performance of original tunes and jazz standards. Concert 3: Tuesday 15 September, 6pm (Wyselaskie Auditorium) Ditties Ken Murray – guitar Jenny Duck-Chong (mezzo-soprano) Ken Murray and Jenny Duck-Chong present a recital of Australian songs written for voice and guitar over the past three decades. Featuring songs by Matthew Hindson’s Insect Songs, John Peterson’s Of Quiet Places, Helen Gifford’s Spell Against Sorrow and songs by Andrew Schultz and Christine McCombe. Concert 4: Monday 12 October, 7.30pm (Wyselaskie Auditorium) Subterranean Frequencies Electric bass - Evripides Evripidou Master of the electric bass, Evripides Evripidou, explores solo pieces and improvisations in this special concert. Evripides is an in demand bass player, producer, composer and educator. His solo performances are notable for his rich tone and the multi-layered musical textures he creates using his bass guitar and effects. Concert 5: Thursday 5 November, 7.30pm (Wyselaskie Auditorium) Pacific Adam May – guitar Paul Carey - guitar Guitarists Adam May and Paul Carey are Duo Agogo. The Melbourne-based musicians perform traditional Brazilian choro music, as well as original compositions inspired by Brazil. Pacific is their first C.D recording and includes a range of compositions written together and featured at the Zihuatanejo International Guitar Festival (Mexico) in 2015. The repertoire is cumulating from a musical friendship initiated in 2009 and galvanised during countless performances, collaborations, and travels to Brazil and beyond.
