EARTH’S MOVING
SURFACE
Chapter 4
Lesson 1
PLATE TECTONICS
Theory that states that Earth’s
surface is broken into large,
rigid pieces that move with
respect to each other.
These pieces move slowly over
Earth’s surface.
LITHOSPHERE
The crust and the
uppermost part of the
mantle.
ASTHENOSPHERE
Partially melted portion of the
mantle below the lithosphere.
Bends and flows which moves
the tectonic plates.
DIVERGENT BOUNDARIES
Boundary where two plates
move away from each other.
CONVERGENT BOUNDARY
Boundary where two
plates move toward each
other.
SUBDUCTION
Process that occurs when
one tectonic plate moves
under another tectonic
plate.
TRANSFORM BOUNDARY
Two plates slide past each
other in opposite directions.
PANGAEA
When North America and Europe
once were part of a large
continent.
CONVECTION
The circulation within fluids
caused by differences in
density and thermal energy.
Occurs in the
asthenosphere.
