A Rebirth • Renaissance: the “Rebirth” of Greek and Roman ideas in Europe in the 1400s – Rediscovery of lost Greek and Roman books – Renewed focus on rights, reason, individualism, and democracy • People become critical (ask questions) of their Absolute Monarchs – Their current governments were very different from Greek and Roman democracy The Enlightenment • The Enlightenment: European intellectual movement in 1600s-1700s – New ideas on society and government – Finally building upon the ideas of the Greeks and Romans – Try to use science to prove the best way to govern society • Enlightenment led by philosophers – Philosopher: a wise person that uses reason to solve problems Total Physical Vocabulary! • I am going to put you into four groups! • Each group is going to get a different vocabulary term (Dark Ages, Renaissance, Enlightenment, Philosopher) • In your groups, you will discuss and define the meaning of the term in your own words • In your groups, you will work together to create a short performance to act out the term • Each group will explain their definition of the word and present their performance to the class!
