What does this tell us about STM and LTM?

Psychology
Contemporary study: Sebastián and
Hernández-Gil (2012)
Definitions – in pairs define the following
terms
 Digit span
 Subvocal rehearsal
AIMS?
In pairs discuss these
points. Be ready to
feedback to the class
Your turn
Starting at 5 digits, I’m going to read, at a rate of one
per second, a sequence of digits.
After each sequence is complete I will say ‘NOW’.
When I say ‘NOW’ you should pick up your pen and
write down, in the correct order, the sequence I’ve just
read out.
We will repeat the process, increasing by one digit each
time.
Are you happy to take part? If so, please have a piece
of paper and a pen/pencil ready.
You need to remain silent throughout.
Your results
- What is your maximum digit span?
- What is the class mean?
- How does our mean compare to the Spanish mean for 15-17 year olds?
Results and conclusions
Compare notes and discuss what these mean.
How does digit span increase? Until what age?
How is digit span different in older participants?
Does dementia effect the phonological loop?
What are the problems with reading out Spanish/English words?
What do you notice?

News Article - task
• In pairs produce a 300 word news article on the contemporary study
• Write this for people who have not studied psychology
• You should explain APRC
•Submit using Showbie
• In pairs, brainstorm evaluation
points
• Make notes in PC format on each
point
Generalisability: Can we apply the findings of research to the general
population?
Reliability: Are the findings of research consistent? Is the research
procedure consistent?
Application: Are the findings of research any use to society, industry, legal
process, education, the family etc?
Validity: Is the research measuring what it intended to measure? Do
the results represent real life?
Ethics: Does the study breech any ethical guidelines? Is it
okay to carry out?
H/W Evaluate your contemporary study from
the cognitive psychology part of your course
(8 marks)
How should you answer this question?
4 marks – describe the study
4 marks – evaluate (2-3 points using PEC)
Spent a few minutes making a plan and then try to complete without your notes.
Time yourselves! Use a different coloured pen if you go over the time you would be given in the
exam.
