Journey to the Center of the Earth Project
Purpose: To develop a model to describe the structure of the Earth.
You have two options for this project. 1) A 3-dimensional model and story or,
2) a comic book. You do not have to do both. Pick the one that suits you the best.
DUE:
What to do for OPTION 1 -3D model:
Part 1 –
Materials: anything that can be recycled (no Styrofoam balls)
1. Using the materials you have selected, create an accurate representation of the structure of the
Earth. Your model must show:
a. Crust
b. Continental crust
c. Oceanic crust
d. Lithosphere
e. Asthenosphere
f. Mantle
g. Inner core
h. Outer core
2. Label each of the above parts of the model.
Part 2 - Write a short story to go along with your model. The story is about a scientist (maybe you???)
traveling to the center of the Earth. Begin at the crust and describe what you observe traveling through
each layer. Although we don’t really have means to travel through the Earth, the descriptions of your
observations must be as factual as possible. Include composition, thickness, state of matter,
temperature, and any other information you have about each part of the Earth. A graphic organizer is
provided to help you plan your story.
The story may be typed or neatly hand written.
What to do for OPTION 2 – Comic Book:
Materials: plain, unlined paper
1.
Write a short story about traveling to the center of the Earth. The story is about a scientist
(maybe you???) traveling to the center of the Earth. Begin at the crust and describe what you
observe traveling through each layer. Although we don’t really have means to travel through
the Earth, the descriptions of your observations must be as factual as possible. A graphic
organizer is provided to help you plan your story.
2. Write the story in a comic book / graphic novel format. The story must include:
a. A description of each part of the Earth’s structure
i. Crust
Include a drawing of each part in the
ii. Continental crust
comic book.
iii. Oceanic crust
iv. Lithosphere
Make sure each part is identified by
v. Asthenosphere
some type of label.
vi. Mantle
vii. Inner core
viii. Outer core
b. The description includes
ix. Composition
x. Distance across (thickness)
xi. State of matter
xii. Temperature
xiii. Anything else you find out or know.
3. The book must include a minimum of 12 frames (3 per main layer)
a. More frames are acceptable.
4. Have colored illustrations in each frame telling the story. Include dialog bubbles.
5. You may hand draw the comic or use a program or app such as
