Blizzard Bag – 6th grade MATH - ASSIGNMENT #2 NS 6.2 - Dividing Multi-Digit Numbers Dividend- The number that is being divided Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient Divisor- The number that is being used to divide Quotient- The answer to a division problem OR Dividend = Quotient Divisor Remainder- Anything that is left over (R) 45 ÷ 7 = 6 R3 7 goes into 45 6 times with 3 left over. The 3 left over is the remainder. When dividing, the order of the numbers does matter. 35 ÷ 7 is not equal to 7 ÷ 35 Division is the opposite of multiplication (inverse operation) If a x b = c then c ÷ b = a; using numbers if 7 x 5 =35 then 35 ÷ 5 = 7 Properties of Division- Division has special properties with 1 and 0. Any number divided by 1 is equal to the number. 4,567 ÷ 1 = 4,567 Division by 0 is not defined. 4,567 ÷ 0 = undefined Dividing a two-digit number by a single-digit numberExample 1: Divide 36 by 2 2 36 1 2 36 2 16 18 2 36 2 16 16 0 Place the divisor (2) before the division bracket and place the dividend (36) in the division bracket. Determine how many times 2 will go into 3 and place the answer above the division bracket above the 3. 2 will go into 3 one time. Subtract 2 from 3 (3-2=1). Bring down the 6 from the 36 and place it to the right of the 1. Determine how many times 2 will go into 16 and place the answer above the division bracket above the 6. 2 will go into 16 eight times. There are no more numbers in the dividend. So 36÷2=18 Dividing a three-digit number by a single-digit numberExample 1: Divide 317 by 5 5 317 Place the divisor (5) before the division bracket and place the dividend (317) in the division bracket. 6 5 317 30 17 The first number of the dividend (3) is less than 5. So take the first two numbers of the dividend (31) and determine how many times 5 will go into 31. 5 x 6 = 30 so 5 will go into 31 six times. Subtract 30 from 31 (31-30=1). Place the answer above the division bracket and to the right of the 6. 5 will go into 17 three times. Multiply the 3 by the 5 and place the result below the 17. Subtract the 15 from the 17. The remainder is 2. The answer can be written as 63R2.
