Blizzard Bag – 6th grade MATH - ASSIGNMENT #2
NS 6.2 - Dividing Multi-Digit Numbers
Dividend- The number that is being divided
Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient
Divisor- The number that is being used to divide
Quotient- The answer to a division problem
OR
Dividend
= Quotient
Divisor
Remainder- Anything that is left over (R)
45 ÷ 7 = 6 R3
7 goes into 45 6 times with 3 left over. The 3 left over is the remainder.
 When dividing, the order of the numbers does matter.
35 ÷ 7 is not equal to 7 ÷ 35
 Division is the opposite of multiplication (inverse operation)
If a x b = c then c ÷ b = a; using numbers if 7 x 5 =35 then 35 ÷ 5 = 7
Properties of Division- Division has special properties with 1 and 0.

Any number divided by 1 is equal to the number. 4,567 ÷ 1 = 4,567

Division by 0 is not defined. 4,567 ÷ 0 = undefined

 Place the divisor (2) before the division bracket and place the dividend
(36) in the division bracket.
 Determine how many times 2 will go into 3 and place the answer above
the division bracket above the 3. 2 will go into 3 one time.
 Subtract 2 from 3 (3-2=1). Bring down the 6 from the 36 and place it to
the right of the 1.
 Determine how many times 2 will go into 16 and place the answer above
the division bracket above the 6. 2 will go into 16 eight times.
 There are no more numbers in the dividend. So 36÷2=18
Dividing a three-digit number by a single-digit numberExample 1: Divide 317 by 5
5 317
 Place the divisor (5) before the division bracket and place the dividend
(317) in the division bracket.

 The first number of the dividend (3) is less than 5. So take the first two
numbers of the dividend (31) and determine how many times 5 will go
into 31. 5 x 6 = 30 so 5 will go into 31 six times.
 Subtract 30 from 31 (31-30=1). Bring down the 7 from the 317 and
place it to the right of the 1.

 Determine how many times 5 will go into 17. Place the answer above
the division bracket and to the right of the 6. 5 will go into 17 three
times.
 Multiply the 3 by the 5 and place the result below the 17. Subtract
the 15 from the 17. The remainder is 2. The answer can be written as
63R2.
 To check your work multiply the quotient by 5 and add on the remainder
to make sure it equals 317.
63 x 5 = 315 + 2 = 31

Practice Questions-
For # 1 & 2 use the words dividend, divisor, quotient, or remainder to label each number.
1.) Label the numbers in the following division problems. 2,655 ÷ 15 = 177
2,655- _____________________
15- _____________________
177- ____________________
2.) Label the numbers in the following division problem. 574 = 95R4

 Place the divisor (23) before the division bracket and place the
dividend (7,452) in the division bracket.
 The first number of the dividend (7) is less than 23. So take the
first two numbers of the dividend (74) and determine how many
times 23 will go into 74.
23 x 3 = 69 and 23 x 4 = 92 so 23 will go into 74 three times.
Place the 3 above the division bracket over the 4 from 74.
 Subtract 69 from 74 (74-69=5). Bring down the 5 from the 7452
and place it to the right of the 5.

 Determine how many times 23 will go into 55. Place the answer
above the division bracket and to the right of the 3.

 Determine how many times 23 will go into 92 and place the answer
above the division bracket and to the right of the 2.
 Multiply the 2 by the 23 and place the result below the 55.
Subtract the 46 from 55. Bring down the 2 and place it next to
the 9.
 Multiply the 4 by the 23 and place the result below the 92. Subtract
the 92 from 92.
 There are no more numbers in the dividend. So, 7,452÷23=324
 To check your work multiply the quotient by 23 to make sure it
equals 7,452.
324 x 23 = 7,452
