THE SET TING
London, 1881
The play is in two acts with a brief intermission. A B O U T T H E AU T H O R
Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland to a vivacious,
well-educated mother and alcoholic artist father. Sent to boarding school at age nine,
Doyle loathed the brutal corporal punishment, but discovered a talent for storytelling
and cricket. He graduated at seventeen and helped his mother commit his father to an
asylum.
Doyle studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh. He was impressed by his
instructor, Dr. Joseph Bell, who was skilled at observation and diagnosis. He would serve
as the inspiration for Sherlock Holmes. While in medical school, Doyle began submitting
his short stories to magazines to supplement his meager income.
He graduated in 1880, but it but it took several years to start earning a comfortable living
as a doctor. In 1886 he began the first novel featuring Sherlock Holmes. He sold A Study in
Scarlet for £25 and it was published in 1887.
Doyle felt conflicted about the popularity of Holmes. He considered the work
“commercial” and hoped his more literary efforts would earn the same success. Despite
his misgivings, he abandoned medicine to write full time. He killed off Holmes in The
Final Problem, but public outcry was so great he ultimately brought back in 1903 with The
Return of Sherlock Holmes. He wrote sixty short stories or novels featuring the detective.
In 1929 he was diagnosed with Angina. On July 7, 1930, his body was found in his garden,
holding a snowdrop.

D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E
Approaching the canon of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective with a gender
switch for the lead character and his trusty sidekick is an illuminating experience. We
strip away all the agency and privilege these characters enjoy purely by being men, and
discover fresh facets of the determination and passion necessary for Holmes and Watson
to do what needs to be done. We expose the disparity of the feminine experience in the
late 19th century, where ceilings were made of old stone instead of glass, where leaning
in could get you locked away, where any rebellion against societal propriety could end
in character assassination, and we see that we aren’t far removed from biases 150 years
old. The shaky, burgeoning friendship between them, denuded of the libidinous pleasure
of masculine mastery, comes from an even deeper trust, a shared courage born from a
shared experience of repression. With these adaptations of the source material -- more
complex than simple pronoun changes -- a new canon emerges, and our enjoyment of
the sensational fiction of the original is coupled with a profound shift in attitude and
perspective. We invite you to cheer on our heroes as much for their insurgence as for
their innate prowess, and to share with them their inspirational call to action, “If we do
not help, who will.”
