Here is a fun list of different ways to practise your spelling words! ABC order: Write your words in alphabetical order. Repetition: Write your words 3 times each. Sentences: Write a sentence for each spelling word. Word Art: Draw a picture and write your words in the picture. Story Time: Write a short story using all of your words. Circle all of your spelling words. Creative Letter: Write your words by cutting out letters in an old magazine or newspaper. Pyramid: Write your words adding or subtracting one letter at a time. The result will be a pyramid shape of words. Handwriting: Write each word 3 times in your best handwriting. Choo-Choo Words: Write the entire list end-to-end as one long word, using different colours for different words. Flashwriting: In a darkened room, use a flashlight to draw letters in the air. Timer: Get a timer, set it for 3 minutes. See how many times you can write your words before the timer goes off. Scramble: Have an adult scramble your spelling words. You try and unscramble them Chalk: Write your words outside using chalk. Letters: Write each word as many times as there are letters in the word. Out Loud: Spell your words out loud 2 times to a brother, sister, grandparent, mum, dad or adult. Trace Around: Print your spelling neatly. Take a coloured pen an draw an outline around the word, closely following the shapes of the letters. Close your eyes and remember the shape. Colourful Words: Use two different coloured pens to write your spelling words. Use one colour to write the consonants and the other for the vowels. Military Spelling: Do jumping jacks, as you clap say a letter to spell your words. Finger Tracing: Use your finger to spell out each of your words one letter at a time on your Mum or Dad’s back. Then it’s your turn to feel and spell. Try to guess the word. Practice Test: Have an adult give you a practice test. Type it: Use an electronic device to type up your words. Words –in-Words: Write your word and then write at least 2 words made from each. Rainbow Words: Write your words using lots of different coloured pens/felts. Make a word search and have someone at home solve it. Draw a picture and ‘hide’ words in the picture. Silly Sentence: Write 5 silly sentences using a spelling word in each sentence. Example: My dog wears a blue and purple dress when he takes a bath. Backwards Words: Write ten of your words forwards and then backwards. Rhyme Time: Chose eight of your spelling words and for each word, write as many rhyming words as you can. Fancy Words: Choose 8 of your words and write them using fancy letters. Upper and Lower: Write each of your spelling words in UPPER CASE and lower case. Riddle Me: Write a riddle for as many of your spelling words as you can. Example: What has a face and two hands but no arms or legs? A clock. Code Words: Come up with a code for each letter of the alphabet. Then write your words in code. Example: A = @ B = ± C = € Acrostic Poem: Choose one of your spelling words. Write an acrostic poem for that word. Example: Fun in the sky. Laps around the clouds. Yes! Riddles-Using a spelling word as the answer, you could try and think of a riddle that goes with it e.g. ‘what lives in a cave and hangs upside down?’ A b-a-t. You could get really creative and think of some harder ones. Joke book-Make a joke book- including one of your spelling words in each joke. Fill-in the blank- Leave out the spelling word in the sentences that you write, and see if anyone can guess which word fills in the blank (have a list of your spelling words there for them).
