Name:_______________ 8.4 Scale Diagram of the Solar System You will be making a scaled diagram of our solar system. This is difficult with one scale because there is so much space in space. The distances between planets and the sun are big … really big! For example, the distance between Earth and the Sun is almost 12 000 times the diameter of the Earth! Therefore you will have to have two scales: One scale for the diameter of the planets and another scale for the planetary distances from the Sun Step 1: Complete the following table using information from pages 318-319 in your textbook. Object Actual Distance from the Sun (AU) Actual Distance from the Sun (cm) Average Diameter (km) Average Diameter (cm) Sun Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Note: see page 624 for common SI Prefixes and conversion examples You will be assigned a partner to complete the remainder of this assignment. Each partner will pick 4 different planets (2 inner planets and 2 outer planets). Each group of two will then have all 8 planets on one sheet. The maximum length of the sheet will be 100cm. Step 2: Come up with a scale to use for distance from the sun. Explain or show why you chose this scale. Step 3: Come up with a scale to use for the diameters of the planets. Explain or show why you chose this scale. Name:_______________ Step 4: Use your scale to calculate the scale dimensions for your four planets. Show all your calculations neatly and organized. Fill in the table below with your results. Object Actual Distance from the Sun (__) Scaled Distance from the Sun (cm) Average Diameter (__) Scaled Average Diameter (cm) Sun Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Fill in the units for the actual measurements that you used (for example did you use AU, km or cm?) Step 5: Draw the sun (or half of it) and draw and label all the distances to the planets. Step 6: Draw your planets on separate sheets and then attach them on to your 100 cm sheet. Include all the planet diameter dimensions on your drawing. Also, put your name or initial on or near your four planets. You will be given 2 full classes to work on this. The remaining work is for homework.
