Lecture 3 Plant Tissues 1 Plant organs: A plant has two organ systems: 1) the shoot system, 2) the root system. The shoot system is above ground and includes the organs such as leaves, buds, stems, flowers and Fruits. The root system includes the parts of the plant below ground, such as the roots and tubers. 2 Plant Tissues: Plant cells are formed at meristems, and then develop into Permanent tissues that are of 3 types 3 Plant Tissues: Meristematic Tissues: This tissue is composed of relatively small cells with thin walls and large nuclei and small vacuoles. Its main function is division and growth. The production of new cells is confined to certain areas of the plant known as Apical Meristems that are present in the tops of the roots and stems. 4 Plant Tissues: Meristematic Tissues: 5 Plant Tissues: Meristematic Tissues: Apical meristem in stem Apical meristem in root 6 Plant Tissues: Permanent tissues: are of 3 types: Permanent Tissues Dermal tissue system - Epidermis Ground tissue system Vascular - Paranchyma tissue tissue system - Collenchyma tissue - Xylem tissue - Sclerenchyma tissue - phloem tissue 7 Permanent tissues: Dermal tissues: Epidermis: It is the outer layer of cells in leaves, stems and roots. It consists of one layer of striated circular cells and covered externally by cuticle and associated with pores . 8 Permanent tissues: Dermal tissues: 9 Permanent tissues: Ground tissues: Ground Tissues Paranchyma tissue Collenchyma tissue Sclerenchyma tissue 10 Ground tissues: Parenchyma Cells: Spherical cells with thin, cell walls and a large central vacuole, located below the epidermal tissue Function: Food production and Storage. 11 Ground tissues: Collenchyma: They have thick wall, cell walls thicker in corners Function: Support and food production 12 Ground tissues: Sclerenchyma : They have very thick secondary wall Function: Support only 13 Permanent tissues: Vascular Tissues: Vascular tissues Xylem Phloem Vascular tissues consisting of cells joined into tubes that transport water and nutrients throughout the plant body. 14 Permanent tissues: Vascular Tissues: Xylem tissue It is responsible for transporting water and salts from root to leaves. Phloem tissue It is responsible for transporting food from leaves that produced by photosynthesis to all plant organs. 15 Xylem Tissues Xylem 16 Phloem Tissues 17 Xylem & Phloem Tissues 18 Exercise: Match the sentences 1- Vascular tissue responsible for the transport of nutrients and the Sclerenchyma carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis, moves in all directions Phloem 2- Plant tissue consisting of cells joined into tubes that transport water and nutrients throughout the plant body. Epidermis 3- Spherical plant cells with thin, cell walls and a large central vacuole; important for storage and food production. Xylem 4- Type of ground tissue, builds very thick secondary cell walls. Vascular tissue 5- Cells in ground tissue flexible for support, cell walls thicker in corners 6- The dermal tissue system, usually consisting of a single layer of Parenchyma cells Meristematic 7- Cells that transports water and dissolved minerals upwards from roots to stems to leaves Tissue 8- Cells are actively dividing cells, located in the tips of roots and 19 Collenchyma shoots in young seedlings.
