READING GAMES & ACTIVITIES WORD GAME Word Families Create and read over 500 words!!! -ack -ank -eat -ump -all -ap -ill -ock -ell -in -oke -unk -ain -ash -est -ine -op -ake -at -ing -ore -ale -ate -ick -ink -or -ame -aw -ide -ip -uck -an -ight -ir -ur -ice -ay What words can your student make from these partial words? Write “ack” on a flashcard and give your student several letters to try in front of it. BACK, HACK, JACK, MACK, LACK, PACK, RACK, SACK, TACK are just a few of the words! Now move onto “ank.” How many words can your student create? 1 WORD GAME Sentence Builder Cut out the following words. Place the words face up on a table and see how many sentences your student can create. Write them down as s/he goes or have your student write them down. Encourage your student to use proper punctuation, such as question marks, commas and capital letters. Did s/he come up with at least ten sentences? Word Game Here are some other words to play with: Thanksgiving, cosmopolitan, transparent, hippopotamus, metropolis, diapers, atmosphere and bather. Or, play the game with a word that the student picks. Just make sure that there is a good ratio of consonants to vowels. 4 WORD GAME Add It On Write the word “at” on a flashcard. Ask your student to create as many words as s/he can by using “at” and one or more of the letters below. B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z (Did your student come up with any of these: bat, cat, fat, hat, late, mat, mate, pat, rat, rate, chat, breathe, path, later, water, and eat?) Here are other letter groupings to play with: “an,” “it” and “in.” 5 WORD GAME DICTIONARY GAME This is a fun way to introduce your student to the dictionary. The dictionary is a great way to introduce alphabetizing – what a great skill to learn! Mixed-Up Letters These scrambled letters spell fruits when arranged in the correct order. Can your student unscramble them all? Each week give your student a new word to look up in the dictionary. Time him/her to see how fast s/he is. Climb the Ladder Arrange flash cards in a long vertical row on the floor. For each word your student gets correct, s/he takes a step forward. If s/he misses a word s/he has to take a step back. See if s/he can get to the end of the ladder. Use it in a Sentence Show the student a flash card and have him/her use the word in a sentence. As his/her skill grows, have him/her use two or three words in a sentence. Praise him/her when s/he is successful. Beat the Clock When your student knows several of the flash card words quite well but just needs a systematic review, see how many words s/he can say in 30 seconds or a minute. Keep a score and see if s/he can improve his/her record. WRITING Clue Put out three cards in front of your student. Give a clue for one of the words on the card and see if s/he can find the word corresponding to your clue. Continue by giving clues for other words. Then put out three new words and repeat the procedure. For example: Always spend at least 15 minutes per session writing! Here are a few ways to get your student interested in writing. 1. Give your student a journal so s/he can write about experiences in his life. 2. Write a poem together. 3. Have your student write a book review of a story you have read together. OPEN 4. Have your student make a card for a family member with a special message inside. RED 5. Ask your student what new words s/he wants to learn. Have him/her write out the flash cards with your help. ARE 6. Have your student write about the funniest thing that's ever happened to him/her. 7. Have your student write about what s/he wants to be when s/he grows up and why. Clues: What do you do to a door? A color word. A word that rhymes with a car. 8. Have your student write about a movie review. Does s/he give the film “thumbs up” or “thumbs down?” Memory Game And most importantly, do not worry about spelling! Your student should feel free to write, think, and dream during this special hour each week. Show your student two words. Take them away and see if s/he can remember what they were. As his/her visual memory improves, s/he should be able to remember three to five words that are set in front of him/her and then removed. 7 HANG MAN Think of a word and draw a blank for each letter in the word like this: _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ Have your student guess the letters in the word. If he guesses correctly fill in the letter. E _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ Have your student keep guessing. R E _________ _________ _________ _________ _________ After your student figures out the word, let him/her think of a word and have you try to figure it out. By the way, did you figure out the above word? It's an animal... SPELLING GAMES • Play commercial spelling games such as BOGGLE or SCRABBLE. • Ask your student to draw pictures of various vocabulary words. • Look up vocabulary words in the THESAURUS. How many other words have the same meaning?! • Play Concentration with vocabulary words. 8 CONCENTRATION Cut out the following pictures. Spread them out on a table, face down. Have your student turn over two cards. Do they match? If not, your student must turn them back over and try to memorize where they are. Now you take a turn. Turn over two cards. Do they match? If so, pick them up and go again until you miss. Then your student goes.
