Chemistry Why choose this subject? If you are curious about the air you breath; what trainers are made of; how to make your own cosmetics; the chemicals in your prescriptions or the forensic used by the police, then this is your subject because you are interested in the very stuff of life. You are probably also ready to work very hard and manipulate complex scientific equipment. Chemistry opens the door to many careers. It is sometimes called ‘the central science’, because it lies between Physics and Biology Entry requirements: 2 GCSE 'B' grades in Science and grade 6 in English Language and Maths Combine this course with: Mathematics (Mechanics), Biology, Chemistry, Computing, a language. Essential if you go on: Engineering, Design, Teaching, Research, Mechanics & Forensics A Level CHEMISTRY Learn about: Inorganic Chemistry Periodicity of Group 2 & Group 7 and Transition Metals Reaction of ions in solutions Physical Chemistry including atomic structure, Bonding, Energetics and Equilibria Organic Chemistry e.g Alkanes, Halo alkanes, Alkenes & Alcohols, Aldehydes & ketones and Carboxylic Acid Other Organic Chemistry topics such as Aromatic Chemistry and Polymers Practical endorsement During the course you will also be assessed on a minimum of 12 practical techniques and investigations. As you progress through the course you will demonstrate your ability to undertake each of these skills and compile a portfolio of your practical work. This will be assessed internally and moderated externally. The 5 competencies You will also be assessed on the 5 competencies, which are: • Follows written procedures • Applies investigative approaches and methods when using instruments and equipment • Safely uses a range of practical equipment and materials • Makes and records observations • Researches, references and reports This cannot be assessed during the 3 examination papers but will form a section of the practical endorsement.
