Chemistry
Why choose this subject?
If you are curious about the air you breath; what trainers are made of; how to make your own
cosmetics; the chemicals in your prescriptions or the forensic used by the police, then this is your
subject because you are interested in the very stuff of life. You are probably also ready to work very
hard and manipulate complex scientific equipment.
Chemistry opens the door to many careers. It is sometimes called ‘the central science’, because it
lies between Physics and Biology
Entry requirements:
2 GCSE 'B' grades in Science and grade 6 in English Language and Maths
Combine this course with:
Mathematics (Mechanics), Biology, Chemistry, Computing, a language.
Essential if you go on:
Engineering, Design, Teaching, Research, Mechanics & Forensics
A Level CHEMISTRY
Learn about:

Inorganic Chemistry

Periodicity of Group 2 & Group 7 and Transition Metals

Reaction of ions in solutions

Physical Chemistry including atomic structure, Bonding, Energetics and Equilibria

Organic Chemistry e.g Alkanes, Halo alkanes, Alkenes & Alcohols, Aldehydes & ketones and
Carboxylic Acid

Other Organic Chemistry topics such as Aromatic Chemistry and Polymers
Practical endorsement
During the course you will also be assessed on a minimum of 12 practical techniques and
investigations. As you progress through the course you will demonstrate your ability to undertake
each of these skills and compile a portfolio of your practical work. This will be assessed internally
