Cell Project Date Assigned:_____________________________________________ Name #: ____________________________________________________ Date Due:___________________________________________ Objective: You will use everyday materials to build, draw, OR write about the parts of a cell. Choose one of the options for your cell project: A. Cell file folder diagram B. Building a cell model C. Writing a travel brochure D. Creating an illustrated children’s storybook or songbook. Each project MUST INCLUDE A KEY listing the appropriate organelles, identifying their structure, and a description of their function. You may choose to do either an animal or a plant cell. ALL WORK MUST BE YOUR OWN! You may NOT use photos or drawings from the Internet, etc. 1.
Cell Diagram in a File Folder v Design a plant or animal cell (can use colored paper or other material to make it look interesting/ realistic). v Size: diagram of your cell must take up an entire side of the file folder. v Label each of the components. Print out organelle names, cut them into small labels, and glue them in the appropriate areas. v Include a Key on the other side of the file folder to identify the structures and their functions. 2.
Cell Model v 3 Dimensional (3-‐D) model of a plant or animal cell. v For a plant cell wall, you will need to use a square or rectangular container or base, such as a shoebox or tupperware container. For an animal cell wall, you will need to use a semi-‐circular container or base, such as a large pre-‐cut half styrofoam sphere or a Styrofoam bowl. v You may choose to use colored or plain playdough or clear gelatin for the cytoplasm (this depends on what you use for your cell wall). v Use 3-‐D objects (beads, pipe cleaners, beans, puff balls, clay, dried pasta, play dough, yarn, etc.) to represent all organelles. Shape and size the material to realistically resemble the organelle. Place each in its appropriate location in cell body. v Label each of the components with flags. Print out organelle names, cut them into small labels, attach labels to toothpicks with some tape, and use these flags to identify your organelles. v Include a Key to identify the structures and their functions. v EDIBLE CELLS ARE PRE-‐ARRANGED (first 3 students with signatures). MUST HAVE PARENT PERMISSION. v I understand that the edible cell will need to be made the night before the project is due. I will help my child gather materials and make a key several days in advance. Guardian/ Parent Signature: __________________________________________ 3.
Travel Brochure v Create a travel brochure called The Cell Land Theme Park. v Each organelle is going to be some kind of ride or attraction. You can make them as interesting as you can but you have to be accurate that the rides or attractions do or show the real function of the organelle they represent. v Your brochure may be done carefully by hand using colored pencils and fine lined, or designed on the computer. Remember, all work must be your own. v You may NOT use photos or drawings from the Internet, etc. v Use your imagination. Make your travel brochure interesting, NEAT, and accurate! 4.
Illustrated Children’s Storybook/ Songbook A PLANT CELL
v Write a story or songs describing what goes on inside the cell. You may choose to type your story or songs on the computer. v Create a front and back cover with colorful pictures and descriptive words in between. v Each page should include a story or song about a different organelle and an illustration. v All illustrations need to be done carefully by hand using colored pencils and fine lined. 5.
