4.G.2
2011
Domain: Geometry
Cluster: Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.
Standards: Classify two-dimensional figures based on the presence or absence of parallel or perpendicular lines, or the presence or
absence of angles of a specified size. Recognize right triangles as a category, and identify right triangles.
Essential Questions
-How do you classify a
two-dimensional figure?
Content Statements
- Students will learn to
identify polygons.
- Students will learn to
identify and classify
triangles
- Students will learn to
identify quadrilaterals
- Students will solve
problems by making and
testing generalizations.
Assessments
Enduring Understandings
- Two- dimensional or plane
shapes have many properties that
make them different from one
another. Polygons can be
described and classified by their
sides and angles.

objects or situations can be found
and used to make generalizations
about relationships
Activities, Investigation, and Student Experiences
Students will sort two-dimensional figures based on parallelism,
perpendicularity, and angle types using a Venn Diagram.
Students will draw quadrilaterals with diagonals. Students will
investigate parallel or perpendicular lines and right triangles.
Given specified criteria students will draw the figure. (example:
a parallelogram with one right angle; a quadrilateral with one
pair of parallel sides.)
