Feel free to bring along chairs and picnic blankets to appropriate ZOL Main Stage shows. To avoid confusion and sightline problems, those with chairs must find a spot on the right side of the grass arena facing the stage, whilst their lower lying, picnicking companions sitting on the grass should keep to the left of the arena. Be warned that some shows will attract large standing audiences so leave chairs, picnics and blankets at home and feast on the atmosphere instead. It focusses attention on the artistry and excellence that we embrace as an organization and that has the potential to change the way we as Zimbabweans engage with the world. I am so proud to work with the remarkable HIFA team, Zimbabwean and visiting artists and our many partners; this group of brave people have again made something miraculous happen in an environment that has so many challenges. The capacity of all of us to make a change in our country and in our world, is a beautiful thing; that capacity is something to be harnessed and nurtured, now more than ever before. 6 I hope HIFA 2017 will be nurturing, emboldening, encouraging and FUN for everyone involved – HIFA 2017 is a celebration and reminder of the power of our collective creative will. We hope you’ll be part of our artistic intervention as we stage a magnificent programme of powerful, prestigious and unforgettable performances and exhibitions. MANUEL BAGORRO Founder & Artistic Director I am delighted with this year's programme which came about as a result of the tireless efforts of the Management Team whose indomitable spirit helped in no small measure to make HIFA 2017 a reality. The team consists of Zimbabweans who are very passionate about their City and their Country. It is a source of immense pride for us as a Board of Trustees to work with these wonderful and committed Zimbabweans who show what can be achieved when differences are put aside for the sake of a project of such importance not only to the City of Harare but also, more importantly, Zimbabwe. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to thank the HIFA Management Team most sincerely. My sincere thanks go to everybody who supported our endeavours to make HIFA happen. An event of such magnitude as HIFA cannot happen without the support of the City of Harare and various Government Ministries as well as their respective departments and/or agencies. MUCHADEYI MASUNDA Chairman of the HIFA Board of Trustees Taking up HIFA 2017 has been a difficult decision but made because of an overwhelming belief in what the Festival achieves. Exhaustion, discouragement and disappointment are feelings that have dogged the Team and its endeavours. I am in awe of the HIFA Team - a Team characterized by self-sacrifice. My respect and admiration is unambiguous. The same applies to the Zimbabwean Corporate Community. The economic environment is beyond harsh. Yet, without the support of these imaginative, committed and patriotic companies, there would be no HIFA 2017. The donor and Embassy community truly care about what happens to the Zimbabwean people. Their meaningful cultural exchange and networking with artists and audiences assures Zimbabweans that their wellbeing is a concern of the international community. The Media is always a key part of STAGING AN INTERVENTION. Their writing about HIFA excites the public and contributes to changing perceptions. I am encouraged by the HifAmigos’ enthusiasm for the Festival and through HIFA’s crowdfunding initiative on THUNDAFUND.COM, to see that there are loyal supporters of HIFA all over the world who truly believe in its ideals. My sincere thanks also goes to the Chairman and Board of Trustees of HIFA. Their advice and assistance and INTERVENTION where necessary have been a constant source of sustenance. Finally I want to thank and welcome YOU to HIFA 2017. Help us cheer each other, bolster each other, help us make a difference. You will no doubt note from the programme that donors and Embassy partners as well as key associates from the local business community have contributed towards making HIFA 2017 happen. In spite of the debilitating economic crisis which has bedevilled our country, local companies continue to believe in what HIFA achieves not only for Zimbabwe but also for the communities in which these companies operate. Our international partners continue to endorse the objectives of HIFA which is the epitome of their support for Zimbabweans across the board. Before touring their “beautifully bonkers” production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream around the world, they pedalled it 1500 miles around the UK by bicycle, with all the necessary set, props and costumes in tow. Now, the show is back by popular demand - and, in usual HandleBards style, we can expect riotous amounts of energy, a fair old whack of chaos, and a great deal of laughter. Join the HandleBards’ all-male troupe in the beautiful HandleBards Glade for A Midsummer Night’s Dream as you’ve never seen it before! And what's the play about? Well - four young lovers find themselves enveloped in the dream-like arms of a magical forest full of sprites, where a feuding Fairy King and Queen 38 are at war over the possession of an Indian boy. A group of amateur actors share the same forest. They’re rehearsing for a play. Fairies and humans collide. Hilarity ensues. "Gloriously eccentric and very, very funny." The Stage "Fast-paced, fun and energetic.” The Shakespeare Standard "Five stars just don’t seem enough. I loved every second." VISIT THE CRAFT AND DESIGN MARKET – IT’S THE CREATIVE HUB OF THE FESTIVAL SITE! HIFA’S INTERVENTIONS INTERVENING WITH YOUTH Young Zimbabweans are at the heart of HIFA. HIFA employs ‘A’ Level students and school leavers and trains them in the mechanics of Festival logistics. This is an important facet of our youth empowerment and employment. These young people experience what it is to work on something positive about their Country – their enthusiasm is infectious. Chompkin’s Youth Zone is a very special area where hourly miracles and meaningful interventions happen. Young performers, attendees of workshops, youth just ‘being’, are in this important area of HIFA each day. If you need to feel energized, visit Chompkin’s Youth Zone and enjoy performances from schools and young artists from around the Country. HIFA also brings in orphans and vulnerable children from under-privileged homes and areas, each day to the Festival, to be part of the event, to enjoy being themselves with no judgment or bias. HIFA actively intervenes on behalf of the marginalized and to this end will train and employ around 55 street youth as part of Festival operations. These young people receive life skills training from various professionals and have the opportunity to ‘change their stars’ and stage their own personal interventions to try and better their day to day lives. The hifAmigos are a stalwart group of HIFA supporters who endorse HIFA’s aims and objectives. To this end they have embarked on a crowd funding campaign to ensure the survival and future of the Festival. Their intervention sees HIFA being able to continue with its Outreach and other community interventions. Log on to THUNDAFUND.COM and go to the HIFA page to get involved. NETWORKING INTERVENTIONS At HIFA 2017, the Festival will, as has become an annual tradition, host festival directors, administrators and producers from within Zimbabwe and around the world for a Festival Directors’ Get-Together. The aim is to promote networking and also scouting of artists, particularly Zimbabwean artists, by visiting programmers and opinion formers. Several conferences and major workshops take place at the Festival and these in turn feed into the exchange of ideas and contacts for which HIFA is so well regarded. HIFA is also working with Zimrights to support initiatives encouraging young Zimbabweans to register for and vote in future elections. Such initiatives feed actively into all HIFA’s youth empowerment programmes and see youth being encouraged to explore their choices and decisions. Together with UNESCO, HIFA will celebrate the International Jazz Day on BancABC Day, Tuesday 2nd May at HIFA. Join the Festival in commemorating this exciting and trail-blazing art form that has been responsible for so much musical development. INTERVENING TO NURTURE TALENT INTERVENING IN THE COMMUNITY Outreach is not just another activity for HIFA – it drives a lot of what the Festival achieves. Artists will be taken out to various low-income areas within Harare to perform and workshop with communities there. The Dance We Made will be on Harare’s streets watching the natural rhythms of life on the streets and encompassing these steps into their own dance piece to be premiered before the closing show of Habib Koite on ZOL Main Stage as well as their own performance in the Girls High School Gym. HIFA will actively intervene to support those with disabilities through performances that celebrate rather than pity those who are different from what is considered the norm. Performance groups like 4G010 Tribe and Mhende Productions explore these differences and offer audiences the chance to understand each other better. HIFA’s host city and its governing body, the City of Harare are close partners in this year’s Festival. The City of Harare actively supports HIFA’s work in bringing audiences into the CBD and reintroducing the public to what makes our City great. Working with City personnel, HIFA repurposes the Harare Gardens and ensures that HIFA audiences see the beauty and lushness of all that surrounds them as they enjoy the Festival. HIFA also takes the Festival right into the heart of the City into First Street with the First Street Stage presented by OK Zimbabwe in association with PEPFAR. This important initiative of the Festival sees a public intervention that is literally life-changing in its scope. Arts and Culture are close to health and well being and with this in mind PEPFAR is supporting the setting up of ‘wellness centres’ around this amazing Stage where the public can get information on nutrition, fighting HIV/Aids and general well being. Within the BAT Global Quarter, HIFA ensures that there is a fair representation from marginalized communities such as street youth, orphans, vulnerable children and rural women among others. These groups are invited to benefit from workshops and interactive activities where barriers are broken down and a feeling of inclusion is the major impetus. HIFA’s Green Partner, Environment Africa intervenes on HIFA Site to produce environmental awareness campaigns. Environment Africa has teams who separate waste generated by the Festival into recyclable entities. If you really want to see this in action visit the OWN YOUR OWN RUBBISH project on the pathway linking ZIMGOLD GREEN and the BAT Zimbabwe Global Quarter. This is an amazing exhibition not to be missed. HIFA’s workshop programme is supported by the United Nations – “Sustainable Development Goals: New Roadmap to Ending Poverty, Transforming All Lives & Protecting the Planet.” This is not just a phrase and ideal to be tossed off and forgotten. At HIFA several workshops are directed to artists to assist them in establishing a more business-like footing in their endeavours and supporting them as they learn to market their skills and talents better. Throughout the year, HIFA holds workshops under the banner HIFA ACCESS. These discussion forums analyze issues and try to come up with solutions that affect artists from all artistic media, leading to more dynamic artists development and effective support. HIFA also actively assist Zimbabwean artists endeavours throughout the year, particularly other festivals, and regularly lends equipment and expertise to assit in the staging of these artistic activities. INTERVENING TO EDUCATE HIFA works with the University of Zimbabwe Theatre Arts Department to encourage students to gain experience in stage craft and management by being seconded to the Festival. Interaction with artists from all genres and the chance to interact with visiting professionals offer these students an opportunity to receive hands-on, high-value practice in some of the theoretical elements of their degree course. The exchange of ideas and the making of contacts prove invaluable to these students in their future activities. HIFA will bring in 3 lighting/sound technicians from South Africa and one from Reunion who will hold workshops with Zimbabwean technicians, work with them in active sound and lighting design for the HIFA stages and provide on-the-job training and skills transfer. HIFA is also hosting the Southern African Theatre Development Camp. This workshop by invitation only, seeks to enhance theatre making and performance, arts management and entrepreneurship skills among young theatre professionals from the SADC region. This is a major facet of all of HIFA’s activities – facilitating exchange of ideas, building on education systems in place in Zimbabwe but requiring support and offering personnel the chance to establish networks that will benefit future employment creation. 59 COMEDY AIDAN KILLIAN (IRELAND) FRI 5 MAY - ZB FINANCIAL HOLDINGS DAY REPS THEATRE - 9PM Investment banker turned comedian, Aiden Killian now consistently writes and performs committed, knottyissue-comedy shows.
