Biomes Biosphere 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. 14. Desert – a biome that is very dry. Ecoregion – a large area of land or water that contains a characteristic and distinct group of natural communities and species. Grassland – a biome that has grasses and few trees. Microhabitat – a very small, specialized habitat within a larger one in which environmental conditions differ from those in the surrounding area. Permafrost – permanently frozen soil that is found in the tundra Taiga – biome that has low average temperatures but has moderate precipitation. Temperate forest – a biome that has moderate precipitation, hot summers, and cold winters Tropical forest – a biome that is warm throughout the year and has more rain than other biomes. Tundra – a biome that has low average temperatures and very little precipitation. 1. 2. Estuary Intertidal zone 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. Abyssal zone – part of the ocean below 2,000 meters. Bathyal zone – part of the ocean that extends from the edge of the continental shelf to its base. Brackish water – mixture of saltwater and freshwater Freshwater ecosystem – ecosystem that contains water that has very little salt. Marine ecosystems – saltwater ecosystems Neritic zone – region of shallow ocean water over the continental shelf. Open ocean zone – includes all surface waters down to a depth of about 2,000 meters. Photosynthetic zone – the top 200 meters of the ocean. Sunlight penetrates well enough for photosynthesis 1. 2. Biodiversity Eutrophication 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. 12. 13. Climatogram – a graph of both temperature and precipitation. Climax community – dominant community of plants and animals that come to live in an area Climax species – dominant species of plants and animals that come to live in an area Disturbance – an event that changes an ecosystem. Ecological succession – a slow development or replacement of an ecological community by another ecological community over time. Poaching – the illegal removal or killing of wild plants or animals against local laws. Primary succession – the changes that occur in an area where no ecosystem has existed Quadrat – a measurement technique that provides an area where you can count the number of species within an ecosystem Secondary succession – the changes that occur after a disturbance in an ecosystem 14. 3. 4. 3. 4. 3. 4.
