Introducing the Root Words Anchor Chart Poster
Before introducing the Root Words Anchor Chart
Poster, make copies of this Really Good Stuff®
Activity Guide, and file the pages for future use. Or,
download another copy of it from our Web site at
www.reallygoodstuff.com. Always use a dry erase
marker on the Poster to preserve its Write Again®
wipe-off laminate surface. Hang the Poster where
students will be able to see and interact with it easily.
Ask students to think about what the following words
have in common: telephone, microphone. Evaluate
their responses, and emphasize that both words
share a common word part known as a root. Explain
to students that much like the roots of a tree, a
root word is the basis from which new words branch
out and grow. Indicate that by adding affixes, such
as prefixes and suffixes, we form new words with
common “roots.”
Show students the Root Words Anchor Chart
Poster. Using a dry erase marker, write the root
phon on the green grass below one of the trees.
Beneath the grass, write the word sound, and explain
to students that words with phon as a root mean
something to do with “sound.” In the leafy area of
the tree, write the words telephone and microphone.
Ask for students to volunteer additional words that
share the same root. Evaluate responses, and add to
the tree, if appropriate. Fill in the Forest
Use the Common Root Words and Meanings List
later in this Activity Guide to select eight root
words. With a dry erase marker, fill in the Root Word
and Meaning areas of the eight trees featured on
the Root Words Anchor Chart Poster. Store a dry
erase marker near the Poster. Tell students that the
Poster will be hanging for an extended period of time
and that they are to fill in the forest by using the
dry erase marker to add words to the trees when
they encounter words that originate from the eight
posted root words. Periodically, remind students to
add to the Poster.
Trees for Me
Select six root words from the Common Root Words
and Meanings List, and on a copy of the Trees for
Me Reproducible, record the six root words in the six
Root Word and Meaning areas. Copy and distribute
the programmed reproducible. Tell students to
combine affixes with the featured root words to find
words that share the same root.
Root Share
Make five copies of the Trees for Me Reproducible. Use
scissors to cut out 30 separate trees. Select 30
words from the Examples column of the Common Root
Words and Meanings List that share root words, and
write a different word in the leafy area of each tree.
Distribute a tree to each student. Tell students that
they are to circulate the room and form groups of
classmates with Example words that the share the
root with the example on their tree.
After students have formed groups, have the
members determine what the root means. Direct
each group member to announce his or her Example
word, confirm the root, and move to another group,
if necessary. Have a volunteer from each group share
his or her group’s deduced meaning of the shared
root. Instruct students to complete the Root Word
and Meaning sections of their tree.
