ENTERPRISE AED SOLUTIONS
Protecting the heart
of your business
AED program implementation and management
Creating a safer place to work.
The American Heart Association reports that more than
300,000 people in the United States die every year from
sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), and it accounts for nearly
13 percent of fatalities in the workplace. SCA can strike
anyone, anywhere—from the stockroom to a stockholder
meeting. And there is only one effective treatment for
ventricular fibrillation, a fatal heart rhythm associated with
SCA: a shock from a defibrillator, supported by CPR.
To effectively deploy and maintain AEDs across an
organization as complex as the modern enterprise, the
choice is a Heart Safe Solution from Physio-Control.
If even a single life can be saved from the potentially fatal
impact of SCA, the choice to place automated external
defibrillators (AEDs) in offices and facilities is a clear one.

What SCA is.
What it can mean.
During sudden cardiac arrest, the normally organized electrical impulses
that initiate cardiac contraction (our heartbeats) discharge chaotically,
and the heart muscle twitches spasmodically. There’s rarely any warning,
and a victim of SCA usually collapses and stops breathing immediately.
That’s when the clock starts ticking.
Calling 911 is critical. So is performing CPR on the victim. But the chances
of survival from sudden cardiac arrest fall by seven to ten percent every
60 seconds, and the single most effective treatment for SCA is early
defibrillation—providing a shock to the heart within the first five minutes.
Unfortunately, the average arrival time for emergency response teams
is between six and 12 minutes.
SCA claims more lives than breast cancer,
lung cancer and HIV/AIDS. Combined.

A heart attack (damaged heart
muscle due to lack of blood
circulation) is just one of the many
causes of SCA. But regardless
of the cause, there is only one
treatment that can help prevent
death from the chaotic heart rhythm
that results with SCA: defibrillation
and CPR within minutes.
The best chance
for a second chance.
SCA does not discriminate. It can strike without
warning, at all hours, in any location, and in people
of all ages and walks of life.
For your business, that could mean not only the loss
of a colleague—a fellow human being—but the very
real loss to productivity and morale that follows such
a tragic event. In addition, there may be other risks
to the company itself arising from an SCA death on
your premises. That’s why an AED program is so critical
in today’s workplace—and why so many industry,
governmental and professional organizations recommend
one. Put simply, it increases the chance of a life being saved.
An AED applies a brief pulse of electrical current to
a heart in arrest via electrode pads, allowing the normal
electrical system to resume control. And it does something more. Small, lightweight and easy to operate,
an AED puts the power to restore the heart of an SCA
victim in the hands of anyone in your company, with
minimal training.

Making the case for AEDs at work
OSHA encourages the installation of AEDs in workplaces.1
2000 Cardiac Arrest Survival Act encourages AED
placement in all federal buildings.2
BOMA has made recommendations for AEDs in the
workplace.3
ACOEM supports employer programs to use AEDs
to manage SCA in workplace settings. The FAA requires
all passenger flights to carry an onboard AED.4
Milliman Global: “AEDs provide significant, predictable
economic benefits to the individuals and companies they
protect, as well as to the insurers who provide their coverage.”5
