There are THREE types of Equations:
1) one solution (unique)
2) no solution (empty set or ). When you simplify, 0
the coefficients of x are the same on each side and the constants are different. 5x + 10 = 3 + 5x
R
3) infinitely many solutions (all real numbers ). When you simplify, the coefficients of x AND the constants are the same. 6x 9= 9 + 6x

Solving word problems: Variables on Both Sides
8.EE.7.B
Word problems are short stories. Here are the steps for a linear equation (ONE VARIABLE).
1) Pick a variable and LET the reader know what letter we are choosing. 2) Write an EQUATION matching the problem.
3) Solve 4) CHECK in words Word Problem Lesson #3.notebook

At Silver Gym, membership is $25 per month, and personal training
sessions are $30 each. At Fit Factor, membership is $65 a month,
and personal training sessions are $20 each. In one month, how

In your groups...
Ten more than three times a number is five times the
number. Find the number. How many solutions are there
that satisfy this problem?
