LESSON 5
Algebraic Expressions
*
An algebraic expression is just a mathematical sentence made up of…..
*
*
A symbol (letter) used to replace a number is called a variable.
Term ~ part that makes up an algebraic expression It can be composed of:
numbers only
variables
combination
A term only with a number is called a constant term (value does not change).
Coefficient ~ the number in front of the variable or variables of a term
“Like” terms ~ two or more terms are called “like terms” if they have
the same variables raised to the same exponents.
Examples
All constants are “like terms”.
Order of Expressions
Number first than alphabetically
(a)(5)(c)(b)
- 2 + 5x - 2z + 3y

Monomial ‐ algebraic expression consisting of
only one term.
examples:
Degree Of A Monomial
For one variable: same as exponent
For more than one variable: sum of the exponents of all its variables.
For a constant: the degree is always zero.
