Graduate Trainee position - Marketing Intern Works with: Marketing Director, Marketing Manager, Digital Projects Manager and Marketing Co-ordinator Background Information Recognised today as one of the finest orchestras on the international stage, the London Philharmonic Orchestra balances a long and distinguished history with a reputation as one of the UK’s most forward-looking ensembles. As well as its concert performances, the Orchestra also records film soundtracks, releases CDs on its own record label, and reaches thousands of people every year through activities for families, schools and community groups. The Orchestra was founded by Sir Thomas Beecham in 1932, and has since been headed by many great conductors including Sir Adrian Boult, Bernard Haitink, Sir Georg Solti, Klaus Tennstedt and Kurt Masur. The Orchestra’s current Principal Conductor is Vladimir Jurowski, appointed in 2007. Andrés Orozco-Estrada took up the position of Principal Guest Conductor in September 2015. The London Philharmonic Orchestra has been performing at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall since it opened in 1951, becoming Resident Orchestra in 1992. It also has flourishing residencies in Brighton and Eastbourne, and in summer plays for Glyndebourne Festival Opera where it has been Resident Symphony Orchestra for over 50 years. Touring abroad forms a significant part of the Orchestra’s schedule: highlights of the 2016/17 season include visits to New York, Germany, Hungary, Spain, France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Switzerland. The London Philharmonic Orchestra broadcasts regularly on television and radio. It also works with the Hollywood and UK film industries, recording soundtracks for blockbusters including the Oscarwinning score for The Lord of the Rings trilogy. In 2005 it established its own record label. In summer 2012 the London Philharmonic Orchestra performed as part of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the River Thames, and was also chosen to record all the world’s national anthems for the London 2012 Olympics. In 2013 it was the winner of the RPS Music Award for Ensemble. The London Philharmonic Orchestra maintains an energetic programme of activities for young people including the BrightSparks schools’ concerts and FUNharmonics family concerts. Its work at the forefront of digital engagement and social media has enabled the Orchestra to reach even more people worldwide: all its recordings are available to download from iTunes and, as well as a YouTube channel and regular podcasts, the Orchestra has a lively presence on social media. lpo.org.uk facebook.com/londonphilharmonicorchestra twitter.com/LPOrchestra Outline This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience within the busy marketing department of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and to develop a thorough understanding of the role of an arts marketing department and its key areas of work within the organisation, whilst contributing to the output of the team. The Marketing Intern will be involved in many of the marketing campaign activities that take place during the concert season, including digital content creation, e-marketing and social media campaigns, direct mail, print production and distribution, audience analysis, promotional offers, etc. The Intern will also have the opportunity to see how an in-house ticketing operation is successfully run, whilst assisting the team in processing ticket orders and staffing the box office on concert nights. The role will also provide experience in basic office management and reception duties, giving you the chance to develop valuable general administrative and marketing skills. The Intern will be invited to observe and participate in departmental meetings to enable them to fully understand the function of the marketing department and its activities. In addition you will have the opportunity to view other areas of the Orchestra's work by attending fundraising events, education workshops, concert rehearsals and concerts etc. The Role Job Title: Reports to: Location: Hours: Probation: Marketing Intern Marketing Manager London Philharmonic Orchestra, 89 Albert Embankment, London, SE1 7TP 9:30am - 5:30pm, Monday-Friday, plus concerts and events as necessary (evenings and some weekends) Two months As the Marketing Intern you will have the chance to: • Gain experience of working with the Marketing team on research projects and marketing campaigns • Take part in tactical marketing activities including, but not limited to copywriting, organising mailings, social media campaigns, creating e-bulletins, marketing research and maintaining databases. • Provide administrative support to the Marketing department and wider team, gaining an understanding of the daily running of a busy arts administration office. This may include tasks such as greeting visitors to the office, post distribution, taking customer queries and booking couriers • In conjunction with the Marketing team, be involved with concert-specific promotions and assist with the administration of the London Philharmonic Orchestra's student campaign, NOISE. • Learn how to write relevant marketing copy for specific audiences and marketing platforms • Learn the basics of proof-reading and assist all with proof-reading tasks • Receive training in the in-house box office system (Tessitura) and deal with incoming box office calls • Receive training in Adobe InDesign software to facilitate simple in-house print production • Learn how to make changes and update content on the LPO website using Joomla content management system • Assist the Digital Projects Manager, and play a key role, in the creation and editing of digital content (training will be given in relevant editing software) • Assist in answering incoming calls to the London Philharmonic Orchestra main telephone line efficiently and professionally and redirect callers to appropriate departments or individuals accordingly • Receive all enquirers and guests of the Orchestra, notify the person they are visiting, look after guests on arrival Person specification • Good organisational skills • Team player/good communicator • Ability and willingness to work off own initiative when necessary • Desire to learn about the orchestral and arts marketing world • • Some knowledge of / interest in classical music Professional telephone manner and demeanour What you can expect from us • The chance to gain experience behind the scenes of a world class orchestra • An introduction to arts marketing and office administration • Support on finding relevant work in the industry as the internship comes to an end, including career advice and help with job applications and interview techniques • A welcoming and inclusive team atmosphere Terms The salary for this position is £17,000 for a fixed, one-year contract. The position holder is entitled to 20 days leave. The package also includes two tickets for all London concert programmes and a total of four seats at Glyndebourne dress rehearsals during the summer months. There will be a two month probationary period, during which time the notice period to be given by either the organisation or the post-holder is one week. After successful completion of the probationary period, the notice period is one month.
