Accessory Organs of the
Digestive System
pancreas – liver - gallbladder
Chyme (/kaɪm/)
from Greek χυμός
khymos, "juice")
semifluid mass of
partly digested food
expelled by the
stomach into the
duodenum.
• Chyme moves from stomach to duodenum, a
little at a time, through the pyloric sphincter
• Duodenum then secretes the hormone
secretin
• Secretin neutralizes the acid in the chyme
Pancreas
• Secretes fluid that contains digestive enzymes into
the duodenum
• Bicarbonate ions produced when duodenum
secretes secretin (neutralizes acid in chyme)
Liver
• Production of bile
• Filters blood coming from the digestive tract
Gallbladder
• Stores and releases bile
• Bile salts help to break down fats into smaller fat
droplets (process is called emulsification)
Digestion of:
Carbohydrates:
starts in mouth, ends in small intestine
Proteins:
starts in stomach, ends in small intestine
Fats:
small intestine
