Elastic ClauseRevolutionPrivateerStrict ConstructionLoose ConstructionJay’s Treaty- The Election of John Adams and the Election of 1800 The French Revolution- 1789-1794 Inspired by America’s new found liberty, the French rebelled against the monarchy of Louis the 16th The Indian Nation- seeing that the “whites” and the newly found United States were going to eventually push the Indian tribes into extinction, the Indians made another attempt to stop them. The British tried to help them, but eventually left the Indians on their own. The Whiskey Rebellion-(1794) A tax on Americanmade whiskey caused a small rebellion in the new states. After Washington moved troops into motion, the rebellion disbanded. Sedition Alien Bribe Provocation Party/Political Parties/Party politics G.W. tried to set a good precedent for the country. Precedent is a good example for people to follow. To bring “party” politics to government To live in Washington DC To serve (one term) 1796-1800 To have a son become Pres. Thomas Jefferson was elected Adams’ VP. TJ said he was done with politics after resigning as SOS, and surprised everyone when he ran for President and almost won. Thomas Jefferson disagrees strongly with John Adams on most policies. Remember Thomas Jefferson and his arguments with Hamilton and Adams. Jefferson wanted– A. a weak central government B. a “strict” interpretation of the Constitution C. the poor or the farmers to be taken care of. A. a strong central government B. a “loose” interpretation of the Constitution C. an economy ran by business and industry The Democratic-Republicans- that sounds better than Anti-Federalists Small government- Agricultural economy The Federalist – by today’s standard, which party does this party resemble. Large government and government programs. Founder- Alexander Hamilton The Feds lose power Democrats France asks for a 250,000$$ bribe to meet with the Prime Minister Tallyrand Then a 12 million$$ “loan” “Millions for defense, not one for tribute” T.J. Congress increases navy to 30 ships Peace time standing army. Adams was terrible at French so he called the French agents “X,Y, and Z” Federalists in Congress passed this act allowing the president to remove foreign citizens. Made it illegal to write, print, utter, publish anything negative about the government. Matt Lyon vs. Roger Griswald Adams seems like he wants war when he ups the military to fight France but then he backs down…. He was mad over the XYZ affair. Adams and Pickney vs. T.J. and Burr (THE REMATCH) Jefferson and Burr won 73 votes EACH!!! Finally Hamilton worked for Jefferson secretly because he disliked Burr. This tie led to the 12th Amendment in 1803 in which the president and vice-president are on seperate ballots. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. What should the United States do about illegal immigrants? Is it fair to ask immigrants to leave, when our country (United States) was founded by immigrants? Should people be able to say negative things about the government? Where should (or should there be a line) the line be drawn for the press? Why did John Adams sign the Alien and Sedition Acts? Why were the Alien and Sedition Acts unpopular? What type of government did the Democratic Republicans want? What did “XYZ” stand for in the XYZ affair? What was John Adams first at •Thomas Jefferson’s rise to power •James Madison and the War of 1812 The public was offended deeply by the Alien and Sedition Acts The Federalist did not support the French Revolution John Adams loses the election of 1800 and the Demo-Republicans take the majority in Congress. (Define Majority) T.J. sends Monroe to buy New Orleans. Madison was given 10 million Surprisingly, Napoleon I offers the entire territory for 15 million. T.J. agrees but is unsure of his power Why did Napoleon sell? Wanted American allies- could not defend territory Marbury V Madison – established judicial review The Louisiana Purchase- this was a great opportunity for the US and doubled its size The LP cost the US around 15 million dollars. (Map on page 340) Lewis and Clark was commissioned by Jefferson to explore the new LP and report on the natural resources the country could use. Here is a short film. Thomas Jefferson’s number one problem was the Pirates of the Barbary States, England’s and France’s Navy. The Embargo Act of 1807 was his response. This made all exports to Europe illegal. What do you think happened? The War Hawks are born. The WH’s pushed for war. Thomas Jefferson cut the military down to 3,200 troops. Problem? James Madison took office on 1808. The War Hawks convince Madison to declare war. War was declared during the Summer of 1812. The British had ships stationed around the world the US had less than 20 ships. What are some advantages and disadvantages for both sides?
