Genres can be divided into two categories: Literary & Informational Literary Texts are usually written like a narrative and can include story elements. Examples of literary texts are: • Fiction • Literary Nonfiction • Poetry • Drama Fiction literature that is not 100% true or real Realistic fiction- stories that could really happen. Contemporary realistic fiction is realistic fiction that is set in modern times. Historical fiction- stories that take place in a certain time and place in the past. Real historical figures and settings may be included in a fiction story. Historical fiction often presents actual events from the point of view of fictional people living in that time period Folklore and Folktales- stories that were passed down through generations by a community or a certain group of people Fables- short stories which illustrate a particular moral or teach a lesson. The theme and characters appeal to children and the stories are often humorous and entertaining. Mysteries- stories that have a real setting and a problem to be solved that includes clues, distractions, and an answer to the problem. Science Fiction- stories that blend fact and fiction with futuristic technology. Myths: Different cultures have their own myths. The main characters in myths are usually gods, supernatural heroes and humans. Usually tries to explain a natural occurrence or the creation of something Epics : stories that involve a hero, usually a human who goes on a quest or adventure to save the day. Fantasy- stories that have elements that are not real, such as talking animals or characters with magical powers. There is usually a conflict between good and evil. Examples of Fiction Myths Literary Nonfiction non-fiction text written with the same characteristics of a narrative. Biography- the true story of a real person’s life from the past or present. Autobiography- the true story of a real person’s life written by that person. Memoir- a text in which the author reflects on his or her own past experiences. Diary- a record that a person keeps of their life on a regular or daily. Examples of Literary Non-Fiction Poetry Poetry is text written in verse form, usually to inspire thoughts and feelings in the reader. It often uses rhyme and rhythm, or it can be written in free verse. Drama A literary work intended to be performed by actors for an audience Informational Texts are nonfiction and give true facts on a variety of subjects. Examples of Informational texts are: •Expository •Persuasive •Procedural Persuasive Text Writing that is meant to convince others to think or act in a certain way • Policy Speech- an oral argument, usually about a particular issue often given by politicians. • Editorials- an article usually found in newspapers and is the authors opinion on a current issue.
