The Puritan Era:
1690s-1760s
Flap One: “Who Were
They?”
Group of Protestants that disagreed
with the doctrine of the Church of
England
As a result of this schism, they came to
America for religious freedom and
settled in the New England area
Unlike the earliest American settlers,
who came for profit, Puritans came to
America for their ideals and beliefs

Believe?”
• Wealth is a sign of God’s good Grace!
• Predestination
• Mankind is born in sin but God will save the
chosen few
• Highly valued industriousness, selfreliance, and individuality

Plain and simple in dress/manner
Religious to the point of fanaticism
Both sexes were literate

Children’s books were even religious in nature
Did not produce fiction (seen as frivolous and,
