Aim: How did Enlightenment thinkers
differ on the role of government?
Do Now:
In the wake of the Scientific Revolution, and the new ways of
thinking it prompted, scholars and philosophers began to
reevaluate old notions about other aspects of society. They
sought new insight into the underlying beliefs regarding
government, religion, economics, and education. Their efforts
spurred the Enlightenment (aka the Age of Reason), a new
intellectual movement that stressed reason and thought and the
power of individuals to solve problems.

• Step #2: Complete a close reading [highlight/underline key
information, take notes in the left margin, and write your
reactions to the text in the right margin] on your assigned
philosophers
• Step #3: Complete the graphic organizer with your partner

• Rank the 5 philosophers in order from 1-5 on
your graphic organizer
– 1 being the philosopher you agree with most and 5 being the
philosopher you agree with least
Justify why you ranked the philosophers in this
particular order. Focus especially on your #1 and #5
ranks.
