Photosynthesis and Respiration The green color of leaves is caused by a pigment called chlorophyll. Chlorophyll traps light energy. Plants use this energy to carry out photosynthesis (making food). What other “ingredients” do plants need to make food? 1.) water 2.) carbon dioxide (CO2) The Basics of Photosynthesis The process of photosynthesis can be summarized using this equation: 6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy + chlorophyll -------» C6H12O6 + 6O2 (glucose) The glucose is used by the plant as “food”. The oxygen can be used in the process of respiration or may be released. Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast of the cell. This contains the chlorophyll. It occurs only in cells that contain chloroplasts. Why is photosynthesis important? 1.) Photosynthetic plants are “producers”. They provide food for other organisms. 2.) Carbon dioxide is removed from the air, and oxygen is released. Respiration is the process by which organisms break down food to release energy. Aerobic respiration uses oxygen. Cellular respiration occurs in the mitochondria of all cells. The chemical equation for aerobic respiration is: C6H12O6 + 6O2 -----------» 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy(ATP) Energy is released and used. Can you see the relationship between photosynthesis and respiration?
