Minerals, Ores, &
Fossil Fuels
Notes
Entry #
3 common Earth resources• Minerals
• Ores
• Fossils Fuels
All are important based on their properties
and how they are used.
Ores
• Minerals mined containing useful metals or
nonmetals.
Fossil Fuels
• Natural fuel coming from the remains of
living things.
• Fuels give off energy when burned.
Ex: Coal, oil
Minerals
• Natural, solid materials found on Earth.
• Building block of rocks
• Each has a chemical makeup and set of
properties to aid in identification.
Physical Properties of Minerals:
1. Hardness- how soft or hard a mineral is.
Uses Moh’s Hardness Scale for rating.
2. Luster- how light is reflected from
mineral’s surface.
3. Color- observable color of mineral
4. Streak- the color made when mineral is
scratched on a tile.
5. Splitting- how a mineral breaks apart.
6. Density- the amount of mass in a given
space.
Chemical Properties for
Minerals:
1. Ability to burn- can it be burned to provide
heat or energy (fossil fuels).
2. Reactivity to acids- is there fizzing or
release of gases when acids are placed on
the resource.
