Pickett’s Charge by the #’s
• 1- The Charge took place July 3rd, 1863
• 2- Involved infantry assault of approximately
15,000 Confederate soldiers
• 3- Faced Union Major General George Meade
and troops numbering 6,500 Federals
• 4- The assault took nine brigades of
Confederate soldiers
• 5- Traveling over ¾ miles of open territory

Obstacles During Battle
• A- Crossing through open territory exposing
the soldiers for easy targeting
• B- Rail fence on west side of Emmitsburg Road
• C- Post-and-board fence on east side of the
road
• D- These fences would either be torn down or
climbed over during the advance under fire

3- This allowed for undistracted reloading

Hardships Within the War
• Large loss of life on both sides
• Dense smoke made for poor visibility
• Musket and cannon fire was deafening to the

At Emmitsburg Road
Pettigrew’s men came under fire from the 8th
Ohio and 126th New York Regiments
Pettigrew’s men drifted right and charged but
were sadly killed
The Union troops hail of rifle fire organized
and efficient did not allow the Confederate
soldiers to return fire

• Protection from Wilcox and Lane on their right
was lost
• Brigadier General Stannard’s Vermont
regiment brings heavy fire
• Confederate brigades become more
discombobulated by the terrain and shifting of
formation to fill gaps
