Physical Properties ◦ Describe the physical appearance and composition of the substance ◦ Boiling point, freezing point, malleability, ductility, color, state, solubility, crystal formation, conductivity and magnetism Chemical Properties ◦ Describe the reactivity of a substance ◦ Ability to burn, flash point, behavior in air, reaction to heat, reaction with acids, and reaction to red and blue litmus Heat is produced or absorbed. There is a change in color. A gas is produced. A precipitate forms. The change is difficult to reverse. A new substance forms with new properties. Any property that can be observed or measured without forming a new substance is a physical property. Color Texture Taste – Smell State Malleability Ductility Boiling Temperature Density Conductivity Any property that describes how a substance reacts when forming a new substance is chemical property. Reacts with water Reacts with air Reacts with acids Combustibility Stability Chemical Reactions: occur when a substance(s) react to create a different substance(s). 3 characteristics shared by chemical reactions: ◦ A new substance is produced with its own properties ◦ Involved a flow of energy (endothermic & exothermic reactions) ◦ Many cause a phase change (i.e. gas formation) Homework: 1. Read Science 10 p.12 – 17 2. Skill Practice pg 15 Q 1-3 3. A1.2 pg 17 Check and Reflect # 1-9
