MATTER (PHYSICAL SCIENCE)
I.
What is matter?
A. Matter
1.
2.
3.
4.
Air
Water
Wood
Human Beings
B. Mass
C. Space
II.
What are the states of matter?
A. Solids
B. Liquids
C. Gases
III.
What are the physical and chemical properties of matter?
A. The physical properties
Physical characteristics would include:
1. Whether it is a solid, liquid, or gas
2. Whether is will float in water (density)
3. What can be observed using the senses
4. Magnetic attraction
B. The chemical properties
Chemical characteristics would include:
1. How a substance reacts with oxygen, ex. – iron rusts
2. How a substance reacts with an acid, ex. – vinegar and baking soda react
to produce carbon dioxide
IV.
What are physical and chemical changes of matter?
1. Physical change is
For example
1. When a state of matter is changed:
a. adding heat to solid matter causes it to melt
b. if liquid matter is cooled, it will reach its freezing point and
become solid
2. Wood is chopped; wood remains wood, but is in smaller pieces.
3. A magnet loses it magnetism, but the magnet is still the same metal, just
no longer magnetic.
2. Chemical Change is
1.
2.
3.
4.
For example:
Baking cookies will cause chemical changes, sugar will caramelize and
the baking powder will cause gas bubbles to be formed
rusting steel wool, oxygen reacts with iron
Tarnishing pennies, oxygen reacts with copper
Burning a candle, paraffin wax reacts with oxygen to produce carbon,
carbon dioxide gas, heat and light are given off.
