The Battle Within: The Influenza Virus and the Keepers of the Body Tyler Ebert,Trevor Kraeger, Tyler Stokka, Lucas Dahlke, Kyle Schwan, Jordan Kappel MSOE CBM Dr. Colton reference DCE SMART team World Pandemic In recent times, the H1N1 Influenza Virus has infected millions of people world wide. SMART Team Students Modeling A Research Topic Objective: To learn about the world of proteins and viruses through modeling and research. Milwaukee School of Engineering Our Project This Years Project: The NS1 Protein, a key component of the H1N1 virus, and the Interferon Protein, the red alert agent of the bodies. Virus on the War Path Every moment of every day, viruses are attempting to infiltrate our bodies. Viral Anatomy Enemy At the Gate Behind Enemy Lines A New Hope:Immunity The biological defenses our bodies use to combat a wide range of pathogens. Native Immunity Native Immunity is your first line defense against invader, does not discriminate one foreign substance from another. It has a policy of kill first, ask questions later. Inflammation A non-specific, physiologic reaction of vascular tissue to injury and microbial invasion. Recognized by the presence of redness, swelling, heat, and pain. Without inflammation and repair, infections would go unchecked and wounds would never heal. Image of Inflammation Acquired Immunity Developed immune response against certain immunogens after exposure to identical or similar viruses. Before After Interferons: The Call to Action When a virus has infiltrated the cell a protein called TRIM 25 is responsible for identifying their presence. TRIM 25 then hooks up with RIG 1 who upon receiving the news begins to produce Interferons. Interferons then travel to every nearby cell alerting them of the imminent danger and allowing them to prepare to defend their homelands. Visualization of the Interferons The Best Laid Plans Go Astray The H1N1 gains its potency among human because at key component the NS1 Protein. The NS1 has a unique structure that allows it insert itself into the TRIM 25 protein. Without being able to connect to RIG 1 no interferons are release. Therefore, the enemy goes undetected.
