Study Abroad Valdosta State University Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies ITALY, GREECE & TURKEY MAY 14—June 8, 2010 May 15-16th: ROME - OSTIA Arrival in Rome. Visit the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Mamertime Prison also Circus Maximus. Visit Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel , St Peters Basilica, Catacombs of San Callisto and Ostia. May 17th: FREE DAY IN ROME OPTIONAL TOUR TO NAPLES/POMPEII May 18th: DRIVE FROM ROME TO BARI – EMBARK FERRYBOAT Transfer from Rome to the port of Bari. Embark on to our ferryboat for our overnight sail to Patras, Greece. May 19th: PATRAS – OLYMPIA - TOLO Arrive in the Greek port city of Patras. Drive to Ancient Olympia home of Olympic Games. The first Olympic Games took place in 776 BC. Afternoon visit to the archaeological site and museum. Continue to the seaside town of Tolo for dinner & overnight stay. May 20th: MYCENAE – EPIDAURUS In Mycenae visit the remains of the prehistoric citadel fortified with the Cyclopean Walls, the Lionesses' Gate, the remains of the Mycenaean Palace and the Tomb of King Agamemnon. Visit Epidaurus: the Sanctuary of Asclepeios, ancient god of healing. See the best-preserved ancient theater in all of Greece, famous for the harmony of its design and the perfection of its remarkable acoustics, easily accommodating 12,000 people. May 20th (cont.): CORINTH Visit ancient Corinth with its Greek and Roman sites: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Odeon, the Bema, and Gallio’s Seat. Continue to Delphi for overnight. MAY 21: DELPHI Delphi--center of the Ancient world, the "omphalos" (navel) of the earth - whose prestige extended far beyond the boundaries of the Hellenic world. On the slopes of Mt. Parnassos, in a landscape of unparalleled natural beauty and majesty. We visit the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Treasury of the Athenians and the Archaeological Museum containing such masterpieces of ancient Greek sculpture as the bronze Charioteer and the famous athlete Aghias. MAY 21 (cont.): DRIVE TO ISLAND OF LEFKADA Drive from Delphi to Lefkada for extended stay MAY 22 TO MAY 29: LEFKADA STAY AT HOTEL PORTO LIGIA These seven days will be spent at the Hotel Porto Ligia, in Lefkada. Most classes will be held here during this stay—they will be informal sessions held in the hotel’s dining area. THE TAVERNA’S AND AUTHENTIC GREEK FOOD Enjoy the rhythm of seaside living on the island of Lefkada. A typical day in the Summer begins with a visit to the sea in the morning, a substantial meal in the middle of the day, then socializing with family and friends at the taverna’s from the late afternoon to evening. LEFKADA DAY CRUISE One day there will be a full day cruise to famous beaches in Lefkada, including Porto Katsiki Beach, one of the top swim beaches in the world. Onto Kefalonia and the town of Fiscardo and lastly Ithaki. Cruise includes swim time. MAY 29: DRIVE FROM LEFKADA TO ATHENS Overnight stay in Athens MAY30 : DAY FREE IN ATHENS MAY 31: ATHENS TOUR & SOUNION Sightseeing tour of Athens. Climb up to the marble-capped Acropolis and visit the famous Parthenon and Erechteion. Our tour continues with the highlights of modern Athens: we pass by the tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Parliament House, Presidential Palace, Panathenian Stadium, Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Academy, the University and the National Library. JUNE 1-3 : 3 FREE DAYS IN ATHENS See the city Shop the Plaka JUNE 4: DEPART ATHENS OR EMBARK 3 DAY CRUISE Transfer from Hotel to either Athens airport or the port to embark on cruise. (not included in base price) JUNE 4: EMBARK ON CRUISE Mykonos: Stroll at leisure through the whitewashed, flowerdecked alleyways, climbing to the sculpture church of Paraportiani or along the waterfront of «Little Venice» to the well-known windmills. Late evening sail for Kusadasi in Turkey. JUNE 5: PATMOS, GREECE & KUSADASI (EPHESUS), TURKEY Kusadasi, Western Turkey: starting point for our tour to the ancient city of Ephesus). We tour the spectacular ruins where excavations still continue in this once great and important city, which was founded in the 10th century BC. Walk through history along marble Library of Celsus, the Temple of Hadrian and the Theatre. Return to Kusadasi for souvenir shopping before sailing for Patmos, Greece. PATMOS, GREECE Patmos: a beautiful and almost mysterious rocky island where the apostle John was exiled and wrote the Book of Revelation. On our tour we drive up to the Monastery of St. John the Evangelist where we have a wonderful view of the island. We also visit the Grotto of the Revelation. JUNE 6: HERAKLION CRETE – SANTORINI Heraklion Crete, where our excursion takes us from the lively bustling city to visit the Minoan Palace of Knossos, legendary home of the Minotaur (half bull and half man). Santorini, Take a mule or the cable car up to the white-washed town of Thera, perched high on the rim of the ancient volcano, the eruption of which (1,600 BC) literally buried a flourishing Bronze Age town which has now been excavated at Akrotiri. JUNE 7: PIRAEUS, GREECE - DEPARTURE Sail from Santorini to Piraeus. We disembark from the cruise ship and transfer to Athens airport for our flight home COURSES OF STUDY PHIL 3060 Ancient Philosophy / PHIL 4900 Special Topics In Ethics: Ethics of the Ancient Mediterranean 3hrs No Prerequisites Dr. Ari Santas A study of some of the most famous and influence ethical writings of the ancient world. From the Pre-Socratics, to Athenians, to the Stoics and Hellenistic writers, we’ll be reading and discussing their cosmologies and theologies and they connected them to eudemonia—the good life. Philosophers studied will include Heraclitus, Democritus, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius. REL 3330 New Testament / REL 4700 Archaeology of Early Christianity 3hrs No Prerequisites Dr. Fred Downing A study of the history, thought, and literature of the early Christian church. The study will be done against the historical and cultural background of the major archaeological sites which we will visit including Rome, Athens, Corinth, and Ephesus.
