Cell Division
How do babies turn into kids? Piglets into pigs?
• The regular sequence of growth and division
that cells undergo is known as the cell cycle.
• A cell grows and divides into 2 new cells, called
daughter cells. The daughter cells will begin the cell
cycle again and eventually divide.
• The cell cycle is divides into three main stages:
interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis.
Stage 1: Interphase
• Interphase is the time period before cell
division.
• During interphase, the cell grows, makes a
copy of its DNA, and prepares to divide.
Stage 2: Mitosis
• Mitosis is the stage during which the cells
nucleus divides into two new nuclei.
– One copy of the DNA is distributed to each of the
two daughter cells.
• Mitosis is divided into four phases: prophase,
metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
Stage 3: Cytokinesis
• During cytokinesis, the cytoplasm divides. The
organelles are distributed into each of the two
new cells.
– When cytokinesis is complete, two new daughter
cells have formed.
• At the end of cytokinesis, each cell will then
enter interphase, and the cycle starts over.

Q1: Summarize what happens to chromosomes
during the stage of the cell cycle in which the
nucleus divides.
Include the terms: prophase, metaphase,
anaphase, and telophase.
