Name ___________________________ Date ______________ Period _______ Mitosis Stations Activity Use this handout to complete your work for this activity. You may not complete the stations in order, so pay close attention to where you are and which station you are at. Station #1: The Cell Cycle Diagram and label the cell cycle in the space provided below. Explain what is happening in the stages – write this at the appropriate spot outside of your diagram. **Look on page 134 in the textbook You must include the following words (either as labels or in your descriptions): Anaphase, Checkpoint, Copy, Cytokinesis, Gap 0, Gap 1, Gap 2, Growth, Interphase, Metaphase, Mitosis, M Phase, Prophase, S (Synthesis) Phase, Telophase Station #2: PMAT Using the prepared slide of the onion root tip, get the slide into focus under high power. Diagram one cell from each of the four stages of mitosis in the appropriate boxes below. Then, describe what the cell LOOKS like and compare that with what is actually happening during that stage of mitosis. (Example: The cell is elongated because the chromosomes are being pulled apart.) Picture PROPHASE METAPHASE ANAPHASE TELOPHASE Description and Comparison Station #3: Plant Cell vs. Animal Cell Cytokinesis Do some online research and then create and fill out a Venn diagram in the space below comparing and contrasting plant and animal cell cytokinesis. Station #4: Time for Mitosis (and Interphase) Using the following data, calculate the percentage of how many of the total cells are in each stage and then determine the amount of time needed for each stage to be completed. After completing the calculations and filling out the chart, make a pie chart that graphs the % and minutes for each stage. Stage Count Prophase 45 Metaphase 9 Anaphase 12 Telophase 20 Interphase 1236 Percentage Time (in minutes) Total % of cells in the stage X 1440 minutes = number of minutes in the stage Give your graph a title and label each section with the % and the minutes and the stage.
