Aim: What happens if the rate of mitosis is abnormal? Do Now: Describe the process of mitosis? What has to happen to the chromosomes before a cell dovides? Explain why. HW: read page 1046-1048, #1-5 Tues: read pp 275-278, page 278 #1-5 green review book- graphing Wed: Page 284 #22 Thurs: Green Review Book: Biochemistry Castle Learning due Monday Quiz Wednesday: Green book pages 1-6- scientific method/cells Quiz Friday: Green book- graphing Test Monday 3/3- Reproduction Regents Review Tomorrow room 112 AM or PMgraphing What is the result of normal Mitosis? 1 cell forms 2 identical NEW healthy cells. What happens if mitosis stops? • Aging • Death What is this? Cancer Approximately 200 types Lung cancer Skin cancer Breast cancer Can you think of some? Prostate cancer What happens if cells are unable to regulate the cell cycle? Uncontrolled cell growth- abnormal cells continue to divide What is the result of uncontrollable mitosis? Cancer: • Too many cells • Abnormal Shape • Abnormal function • Starve the body’s other cells Cancer • Cancer: uncontrolled cell division Tumors -Lumps or a mass of cancerous cells. Tumors can be: • malignant (spread dangerous) or • benign (can’t spread – safe) Metastasize Cancer cells also can spread, to other parts of the body and form new tumors. How do they spread? They spread by using the circulatory system and lymph nodes. Lung Cancer: Healthy Lung Cancerous Lung What causes cancer? •Poor Diet • Mutations - to genes, the cell's instructions for •Certain (Viruses) making Pathogens the proteins it needs to survive, grow and multiply. •Genetics • Ultraviolet radiation •UV Radiation (Sun) • Viruses • Usually cancer is not •Drugs (Tobacco) inherited • Carcinogens: chemicals Anatomy of a Cigarette • Smoking causes a third of all cases of cancer • Cigarette smoke contains 3000 different chemicals. Treatment • Surgery: physical removal of the malignant tumor • Radiation: disrupts cell division • Chemotherapy: drugs that prevent cell division by interfering with mitosis Prevention • Don’t Smoke • Wear Sunscreen • Regular check-ups
