Bell work - 5 mins! List the ecological levels of organization from the largest to smallest. CN: Carrying Capacity Pg. 24 right side Learning target I can define carrying capacity. Today I am… learning about limits to population growth. So that I’ll be able to… understand that ecosystems can only support a given population. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can define carrying capacity in my own words. Group discussion – White board List all factors you can think of that affect population change. Why study population growth? Ecosystems can only support a limited population. Carrying capacity The largest population a given area can hold. Example: Video – Yellowstone National Park Without wolves: Elk pushed the carrying capacity of the park. With wolves: Elk decreased from 16,791 in winter 1995 to 8,335 in winter 2004. Exponential growth Increases by a fixed percentage each year. (Unlimited resources) Exp. growth rarely lasts long Pick 3 ! no food competition human activities shelter predation natural disaster space disease lack of water Logistic growth Exponential growth is finally stopped by limiting factors. How does carrying capacity affect population growth? The larger the capacity, the more population of a species can be sustained. Who studies population changes? Population ecologists (They study the structure and dynamics of populations.) Video – 4 mins Sturgeon in Lake Winnebago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QI2ixJeIxEU Write 3 facts from the video! Quick check I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can define carrying capacity in my own words. Complete Cornell notes summary + get stamp!
