UK Earthquake - February 2008
On Wednesday 27 February at 00:56, the British Geological Survey (BGS) recorded an earthquake
with a magnitude of 5.2 (ML) on the Richter scale near Market Rasen, Lincolnshire.
This was the largest earthquake in the UK since the magnitude 5.4 ML Lleyn Peninsula quake in
1984, which was widely felt across England and Wales.
The links below have been compiled to help you find news reports, data and teaching resources as
quickly as possible. Map of Plate Boundaries (USGS)
Don't forget to fill in the BGS Earthquake Questionnaire to help them study the effects of
earthquakes.

Primary CPD
Primary Subject Leader CPD - Canterbury
The TDA are providing funding for teachers to take part in a three day project between January 2008 –
March 2008, working with Subject Associations and Canterbury Christ Church University tutors. The
project will develop the skills required for leading a subject, including monitoring standards, evaluating
teaching and learning, leading sustainable improvement and developing coaching and mentoring skills.
Initially, places are limited to five teachers per subject area, and the date of Day One will be Monday
14 January 2008, Days Two & Three will be in February and March. For further information contact
Sharon Mackintosh (01227 767700 Ext 3263).
Geog Blog
Wendy North, Primary Projects Leader for the Action Plan for Geography, has created a blog page
called Everyday Geographies. The blog aims to 'share good ideas about primary geography with
teachers and other educational professionals'.
Sustainable Schools Leader Pack - Free Download
The Sustainable Schools rural urban linking project was funded by the Yorkshire and Humber
Global Schools Association. It ran from January to July 2007 and linked four rural schools in Craven,
North Yorkshire with four urban schools from Bradford or Keighley. The resulting activity pack can be
downloaded free from the YDMT website. If you have any further questions about the pack or the
project please contact Judy Rogers, Community Officer at YDMT on (015242 51002).
