THE SOLAR SYSTEM MS. LANHAM WHAT IS THE SOLAR SYSTEM? • A collection of 8 planets and their moons in orbit around the sun! • The solar system is made up of everything that is gravitationally bound to it, including asteroids, meteoroids, and comets. WHAT IS A PLANET? • Large, natural objects that orbit, or travel around, the sun. • There are 8: 1. Mercury 2. Venus 3. Earth 4. Mars 5. Jupiter 6. Saturn 7. Uranus 8. Neptune Mercury is closest to the sun. As the list goes down, the planet gets further from the sun. That means Neptune is the furthest planet from the sun! VOCABULARY! • Meteor: A meteoroid that burns up as it passes through the Earth’s atmosphere is known as a meteor. If you’ve ever looked up at the sky at night and seen a streak of light or ‘shooting star’ what you are actually seeing is a meteor. • Asteroid: Asteroids are small solar system bodies that orbit the Sun. Made of rock and metal, they can also contain organic compounds. Asteroids are similar to comets but do not have a visible coma (fuzzy outline and tail) like comets do. • Comet: A comet is a relatively small solar system body that orbits the sun. When close enough to the Sun they display a visible coma (a fuzzy outline or atmosphere due to solar radiation) and sometimes a tail. • Meteor shower video! Planet Rap Song
