Startec, tetracycline test kit in chicken meat
Originated from the dumps against the high of tetracycline antibiotic usage in broiler chicken
which exceed the threshold, five University of Brawijaya (UB) students created a tetracycline
residues detection kit in broiler chicken meat. The device named as STARTEC (Smart
Tetracycline Residual Kit Detection) is a part of Copyright Works Student Creativity Program.
STARTEC was initiated by Bekti Sri Utami (FKH 2013), Hana Razanah (FKH 2013), Puspita
Diah Pravitasari (FMIPA 2012), Fitri Indah Permata (FKH 2014), Annisa Rizqi Rafrensca
(FKH 2014). The device is able to detect the existence of tetracycline antibiotic residue in
chicken meat. "Tetracycline is an antibiotic which being used to prevent disease infection
and growth driver in broiler chicken. Tetracycline has broad spectrum, which means it has
fighting ability to a number of pathogen bacteria. Besides, tetracycline is a low-cost antibiotic
and easily obtained," Puput said.
Puput added, antibiotic usage if against the rules, will have a negative impact. "The impact
of antibiotic use in the chicken is leaving a residue on chicken carcasses and able to raise
consumer's resistance matter due to continuously subtherapeutic accepted, disruption to
normal microflora in intestine which is able to reduce population and eliminate good bacteria
strains, allergenic, hypersensitivity and toxic in consumer's body," she explained.
"We innovate the device in a reaction between tetracycline and H2SO4 principle. Due to the
reaction, could be seen the existence of colour changes. The way of the device work is by
mashing chicken meat until slightly smooth, and thereafter to be injected ethylene diamine
tetra acetate acid (EDTA) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The colour changes that we use as
detection indicator," Bekti said.
"Under the supervision of drh. Dyah Ayu Oktavianie A.P., M.Biotech, the device will
continuously to be studied and developed to actually be used by communities in Indonesia.
Thus will able to avoid consumers in consuming tetracycline which exceed the threshold and
able to increase safety of animal origin foods. [Vicky/Humas UB/trans. Denok]
