The high nutrition and water level in chickens cause them to be easily grown with spoilage
and pathogenic bacteria which damage the chicken. The damage is sometimes difficult to
know if the chicken is packed, so people have difficulties to identify the freshness of the
chicken.
It becomes the reason for the students of Faculty of Agricultural Technology (FTP) and
Mechanical Engineering, Ulul Musyhidah (THP / 2012), Rosyid Ulil Albab (THP / 10), Ina Nur
Anisa (TEP / 12) and Satrio Pung Cahyo (Mechanical Engineering 2012) to collaborate to
create chicken packaging innovation called Yudishthira 39. Under the guidance of Nur Ida
Panca, S.TP., M.P., Yudishthira 39 is the Herbal Smart and Active Packaging which has
been applied to "Solah Broiler" slaughterhouse in Pundensari Hamlet RT 03 RW 01, Jeblog
Village, Talun Sub-district, Blitar District through Student Creativity Program-Application of
Technology (PKM-T) of Directorate General of Higher Education (DIKTI) 2015.
Yudhistira 39 is a packaging technology which is able to handle the problem of chicken
freshness. Herbal smart and active packaging, Yudhistira 39, consists of arrowroot starch
component which is mixed with glycerol and water. Then it is put in an oven for 12 hours to
produce the sheets of edible smart film. “This sheet is pH indicator. This indicator will
change the color if chicken condition is bad,” Ulul said.
Yudhistira 39 is also completed with active packaging which can maintain the quality and
extend the shelf life of chicken which is made from natural materials. Therefore chicken in
traditional market can compete with chicken in supermarket and can be used for the
preparation to face economic situation changing in coming AEC 2015.
After doing the socialization (25/5/2015), PKM-T team implemented Yudhistira 39. With its
application, it is expected that it can produce good a quality and hygienic chicken and also
can detect the damage before the consumers buy it. Besides, it is also to prevent the moving
of chemical materials in plastic package that is absorbed by the chicken. [Vicky/Humas
