Solve Quadratic Equations Using the Zero-Factor Property
De…nition:
"Quadratic Equations"
A quadratic equation is an equation that can be written in the standard form

where a; b; and c represent real numbers and a 6= 0:
Examples:
A solution of a quadratic equation is a value of the variable that makes the equation true. Many quadratic equations
can be solved by factoring and using the zero-factor property.
The Zero-Factor Property:
When the product of two real numbers is 0, at least one of them is 0.

This property also applies to three or more factors.
The Factoring Method for Solving a Quadratic Equation:
Step 1: Write the equation in standard form: ax2 + bx + c = 0:
Step 2:
Factor the polynomial.
Step 3:
Use the zero-factor property to set each factor equal to zero.
Step 4:
Solve each resulting linear equation.
Step 5:
Check the results in the original equation.

Solve Higher-Degree Polynomial Equations by Factoring
Some equations involving polynomials with degrees higher than 2 can be solved by factoring. In such cases, we use the
extension of the zero-factor property. When the product of two or more real numbers is 0, at least one of them is 0:
